The Kony Ealy Gambit

Not drafting those positions in the 1st round isn't the same as neglecting them. The panthers didn't neglect wr year after year anyway, hurney just sucked at evaluating them lol

Of course you don't see any scenario where that happens because nobody here knows who the panthers consider 1st round talents and all we hear is how incredibly deep the draft is.

Ok, I agree with everything in this post.

I think of it like this::

If the WR/OT is equal in ability to the DE, then you take the WR/OT because it's a position of need.

If the WR/OT is a 9 on a scale from 1-10 and the DE is a ten, I'd personally take the DE because he's the better player, but I certainly understand those who would lean WR/OT.

If the WR/OT is an 8 while the DE is a ten then you take the DE every time IMO

So with the OP's example, it depends on if Gettlemen believes Kony is equal to, marginally better than, or clearly better than the WR's in this draft. If he's better at all, I'm talking Kony. This philosophy gets murky in later rounds because the players values get closer together.

This is hyperbole, but to those so adamant about taking a WR/OT is the first because of need, would you have a problem with Gettlemen taking Clowney? If you wouldn't then it's not the philosophy you have a problem with it's more that you don't believe that Kony is any better than the WR's potentially available.

Also you can never have to many pash rushers. No I wouldn't draft a QB BPA. Backup QBs don't see the field. Backup MLBs rarely see the field, as well as backup safeties and offensive linemen. But for Dline, cornerback, or Wide Receivers, you can never have too many quality players at those positions and if they're BPA, I wouldn't hesitate

That sound great in theory, but even if we give CJ an extension to bring down his 2015 cap hit, it will still be fairly high dollar with even more guaranteed money.  So, while we might be able to lessen the immediate hit, we probably couldn't bring it down any lower than 7-8 million from the current 16+ million (and I'm being generous).  But then that will significantly increases the cap hit in subsequent years which would impact our ability to keep the rest of the core guys that will need extensions in the near future.  So, to be honest, I really don't see any scenario in which we can extend Hardy for anything near what he will accept and keep CJ...at least without sacrificing someone like Luke, Star, or Short...and whomever we get in the 1st this year.

My thinking is that CJ has already gotten a fat contract. Maybe he takes a few mil less than what he could get elsewhere to stay here and finish this. A lot depends on what happens this year. If he ballz out once again. You have 3 choices. 1. Extend him/redo his contract making it more cap friendly. 2. Cut him and suffer the conciquences of a cap casualty. 3. Let him play, and pay him handsomely to do so.

If his play falls. The same 3 choices apply.

I say, get Kraken done this year. Extend CJ next year and save 8-9mil in cap space. Extend Cam as planned. The next year you do Keek, and then Star & KK are next in line. Easy Peasy.

hey guys remember that singular time gettleman had absolutely no control over the giants personnel decisions and the giants with a loaded roster took a great player?

Gettleman would absolutely hang our roster out to dry like and all you folk thinking we should take great prospects at areas of needed in a loaded class clearly havent been watching espn enough because when you dont have any idea how the draft process works but wanna sound intelligent you say "We draft the BPA hurr durr"

This all sounds great, and what I would love to happen if we could afford it.  But the problem is what extending CJ will cost.  Sure, we can save a lot in 2015 and probably some in 2016, but beyond that his cap number will start to jump again.  And in order to get the extension, we would have to include even more guaranteed money along with the years.  Quite frankly, I just don't see how we can do that, sign Hardy to a jumbo contract, and also extend Cam, Luke, Star, etc. to monster deals as well.  I think after this season we will have to make a choice between signing Hardy to a long-term deal or keeping CJ.  Either way, I believe we will need a new starting DE in 2015.

You're SO right. I was mad we let all those DT's slip through our fingers last draft...

I didn't mean that in a sarcastic way. I didn't understand why we drafted 2 DTs back to back, but I didn't question it. I didn't understand why we drafted Kuekley, but I didn't question that either. Last year we did a great job filling the holes in our roster with quality players that would have just been depth elsewhere. I have no doubt that we will do the same this year both before and after the draft.

Yes, yes it is. Your right. Excuse me for typing like it is a fact a rookie won't start over two pro bowl des. If we draft him(very unlikely) and he starts bc he is more talented(not bc of injury or anything like that) pm me and I'll give you $1,000.

Thank you but i don't want the money. Truthfully i don't even know who Ealy is. Still can't tell you where he went to college. But if you are clairvoyant, how about sharing some lotto numbers with me.

Bpa is stupid in my opinion unless your just stacked like say the 49ers. Bpa is why we have selected a wr in the first round since carruth and why we dont have one now. Always more pressing needs. Now sometimes it works out with say luke. Hated the pick at the time because of the depth I thought we had at lb. But just goig pure bpa we could end up with a back up defensive tackle or something stupid.

LOL at the logic that thinks that a player, CJ included, will just give back 8-9 mill out of the goodness of his heart.
