Because if you trade up thats pretty much all but saying you need this player.your not waiting for bpa to fall in your lap and your giving up more get said player.

Or it could be saying that if your #5 rated player is available at #20, he's far and away the BPA at that point and worth giving up some extra to go get.

I think that you can pay the groundwork with a team ahead of the draft. You work out what it would take to make the jump with a team and know the players that you would jump for.

But, I agree that you do not make a trade before the draft in the spots that we are talking about...too many variables.

Yeah, would make sense to lay the groundwork ahead of time and get a sense for what it would cost.

There's not a player in this draft outside of the top-8 picks worth trading up for. I'll be pissed if we give up anymore than a 5th rounder to trade up, regardless of who it's for.

I don't know what type of credentials you have, but when people make comments like this, I can't help but think they are delusional about how much they think they know.

How?

anytime a team trades up they're doing it to get a guy they really like, if we trade up i'd assume were doing the same

hypothetically,if we trade up i don't think we would do it just to get the bpa but to get somebody DG likes and doesn't think will make it to pick 25

therefore,in this particular situation i don't think bpa would apply

BPA means best player available.

If you make a trade, and select anyone that you have graded at or higher than that selection, you are still drafting the best player available at your spot.

Gettleman moved up to get Benwikere in the 5th, because he knew he would be a stud, if Gettleman moves up that far in the first it's probably because he knows someone is a future pro bowler.

Nope....completely wrong.

All it says is that he sees a BPA guy that would be available in the 16-19 range that is worth more than the players he could get at 25 and whatever other pick we would give up.

It actually totally supports the BPA view.

I keep hearing people talk about Gettleman's "style" and what it seems like he will or won't do.  The guy has two years of GM'ing to look at and both of those years he has been battling significant cap issues.  There's simply not enough info to go off of to make any real conclusions about Gettleman and what he may or may not do.  Sure, we all know the rhetoric that Gettleman has preached, but actions speak louder than words.

    • We just need to invent a new formation where Bryce stands 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage and JJ Jansen plays center.
    • I mean it was when Donnelly was out there for two years. The rumor of Knicks getting a frozen envelope for patick ewing, among other stuff. Then there was giving the first pick which was the local choosen one lebron James to cleveland. The league/David stern found a buyer for the new orleans included gifting of the first pick, which was Antony Davis. As a hornet fan I remember he was 10000000000000000x the clear best player and the hornets drafted a role player without a jumper at #2 overall. Imagine Davis on the hornets, he would have changed the loser history for sure.   Many lotto felt fixed, or WERE fixed.  The thing is these smooth brain fans are like wrestling fans, they don't care just have drama/action/entrained/etc,   My issue is why would the other owners allow this? Sure money and all, but after billions millions don't matter as much....they want trophies, wins, and bragging rights among other owners. If I was a owner and we had one of those "secret" meeting and they go- "Bas we are giving the clear #1 pick Davis to new orleans and you get the #2 so be happy'. I'd put the team up for sale the nano second after that BS.  I felt the same, but I left the NBA mainly cause the games were boring and lazy until 2 minutes left in each quarter. All-star games became regular season games. Yes teams/coaches like spurs with pop, Larry brown, and pat Reilly played hard. Then add in Michael Jordan being the worst owner in history, it was easy to leave.
    • IMO his issues are fundamental and not personnel wise.  He is not going to overcome that in one off season
