what was the most talented team in panthers history

Recommended Posts

forget records for a second, as we all know the panthers have done some crazy poo with decent/average rosters (2003) and choked horribly with stacked rosters (2006). so what would you say is the most talented team in franchise history?

I would probably say the 1996 team. its a shame that the 1996 packers are one of the GOAT teams because we would have smacked the patriots silly in the super bowl

I was raised a panthers fan since season one, but being that I'm 25, I didn't understand the game until about 2002-03 and didn't truly appreciate and recognize the subtle things (blocking, coverages etc.) until 07-08.

So in my memory, I've always felt that 03 was our most magical team and that 05-06 was our most talented on paper.

In 1996 I was 6 years old. So, any of you veterans care to explain to me what was truly so special about that team? I remember watching all those games with my dad growing up. But I think my focus back then was more on my ball cards and ninja turtle figures. Would love to hear about some of what made that team so good.

05 probably was the most talented, injuries just buried us though. That said, this team absolutely has the ability to top it.  We have legit MVP candidates on both sides of the ball in Cam and Kuechly and a lot of talent surrounding them.  Health is our biggest enemy this season.

On the offensive side of the ball, imo the 03/04 Superbowl team.  Arguably the best group of receivers we ever had with Smith, Proehl, and Moose.  Stephen Davis had some juice left in the tank, and he and Foster made a excellent rb tandem.   The offensive line was very good (albeit with some help) and Delhomme was solid enough at qb.  I think the level of talent on offensive that year was underrated, but it did take them a while to gel.  On the defensive side, I think the 02 squad was best, although I guess there wasn't much difference between 02 and 03 talent wise.

IMO, the 05 squad didn't have much offensive talent.  Moose was gone, Proehl and Davis were to close to the end of their careers.  Our offense was basically 4 ypc from Foster, and throw it to Steve Smith. Fortunately, our defense forced a lot of turnovers, which helped the offense quite a bit.

    • The Sanders thing is fake. We could use some safety help no doubt but the FB thing about him asking us to sign him is fake.
    • GREAT LIST!!!!! I'd look to add both Davis and Muma at ILB.  One is a WILL ILB and the other is a SAM ILB. Clear upgrades over Bam and Cherelus Mukuamu would be a great addition at safety.  I'd drop Scott for him and start one of Richardson or Ransom I'd give Fadil Diggs a look over DJJ any day of the week.  DJJ is not long for the roster once Nic is 100% Outside of the guys I mentioned and a CB to be named later I really don't see too much shuffling from what we have on our 53.  I think we need to get creative with our PS.  Luckily we are healthy and can take some time to develop players if we retain a few of our own.  I think Kingston and Tarquin will be back at OL for us.  Sam Roberts, Mike Reid, and Bartholomew for sure on defense.  I'd assume Wright will stick on the PS until our rookie kicker proves himself.  Sam Franklin would be a perfect PS signing.  I'd love to pick up Kyle McCord or Trask as a PS QB.  One player to keep an eye on is Jalen Brooks from the Cowboys.  He's from the area and is talented.  Lots of options.  PS players can play 4 games before having to sign on for the rest of the year!!!
    • Agreed. In a similar way to Aaron Donald being considered too small for IDL when he was drafted, Lampkin is always viewed as too small but just dominates anyway.
