I just realized: I have no idea where the name "Panthers" came from

If the Buccaneer has a sword that would be a factor.  Don't see a Panther killing a Buffalo or Titan either. That is beside the point. The Panther is the perfect spirit animal. Strong, fast, stealthy, scary, intimidating.

I used to volunteer at a big cat sanctuary and I have seen lions, tigers and a panther(Jaguar) up close.

I sht you not the panther was the scariest. It's growl was the deepest. It held the most anger out of all the cats and when it was in the shadows you could not see the thing at all.

The Panther is god damn Batman of the animal kingdom. We should be proud.

So all of the sudden...a big ass panther....who is totally black.....and can kill both you and your children is not cool enough because it doesn't reflect what?  Our banking heritage?

You fucxs never cease to amaze me.

No way. Every mascot with a gun or multiple humans would win. Plus every mythical or mechanical mascot a la Titans and Jets. Animals as mascots don't stand a chance against humans or better creatures. And a larger animal like a bear, tiger or lion would win for sure too.

said like a person who has never had to fear for his life.

To be honest, Hornets would have been a good name had the NBA team not already taken it.  It has been a nickname of Charlotte for a while in all 3 sports--Baseball (double-a farm team), football (World Football League--I think Gary Danielson was the QB) and the NBA.

However, when the observer asked for potential nicknames for teams back in the day, I sent them "Sharks" "Bloodhounds" and "Copperheads" because all had regional ties.

honestly the name is perfect right now.

the two faces of our franchise cam and luke resemble panthers; sleek, agile, quick, strong with a viciousness to them.

although Sharks would have been pretty cool although Oliver Stone would have had to pick a new fake team name..

I'm down with a draw vs a jaguar...reluctantly, but a Bengal tiger would be gnawing on our skinny little bones

That is false.  Here is proof.  Asian leopards are black panthers.  Here is one fighting a bengal and the bengal is all like "fug this poo I'm outta here".  At best it is a tie, much like the game against them.

Panthers are kick ass
