CBS Sports 7 Round Mock Draft with trades

Recommended Posts

I believe we go CB with the first pick though I think it Josh Jackson will be our pick.   We trade one of our thirds to get Reid.

Thought?

Carolina Panthers

ROUND OVERALL PLAYER NOTES
1 24 Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville
2 39 Justin Reid, FS, Stanford from CAR
2 55 Traded to Chicago
3 85 Traded to Chicago from BUF
3 88 Rashaad Penny, RB, San Diego State
5 161 Keke Coutee, WR, Texas Tech
6 197 Marcell Frazier, DE, Missouri
7 234 Taylor Hearn, G, Clemson from LAC/BUF
7 242 Ryan Izzo, TE, Florida State

The Panthers are looking for secondary help early in the draft, per our Jason La Canfora. I like them to snag Alexander, a late-riser during the draft process who should immediately slot into the starting lineup.

The Panthers are in the perfect spot to trade up for another key secondary target early in the second round, and here they trade No. 55 and No. 85 to draft Reid, who is a candidate to go in the first round. Penny improves their talent at running back and should be a great option to pair with Christian McCaffrey.

Coutee is a nice fifth-round find who brings speed to the receiver position and could take over for Torrey Smith eventually. Frazier could eventually develop into a starter at defensive end. Hearn brings depth at a position of need after the loss of Andrew Norwell. Izzo won't be a receiving weapon who can take over for Greg Olsen down the line, but he's a nice inline tight end.

Here's the whole article.

If that were how this all worked out. I would not be too upset. However, I would prefer to keep all 4 picks. You could probably still get Alexander. Probably still get Reid, or an equivalent. Probably still even get Penny. So having that extra 3rd just may serve us well.

Getting a shot at a WR, and RB in the 3rd is yuge this year. CB, and S in the 1st 2 rounds sounds good to me. But we absolutely need to at least try and address WR, and CB in the 3rd.

I am with you on this.  I don't see a need to trade one of our thirds.   We can get a player that we like without trading away our picks.  We have too many needs to combine two picks into one.

This is an ideal draft imo. The WR hype is over the top. The DBs are better value and Rashaad Penny is a perfect compliment to CMC.

I think Moore and Ridley are both good players but they aren’t making the difference in deep playoff run or not for a win-now team in the late 20s which is what we are. Alexander, Reid, Penny could make that difference.

I don’t think Penny last that long, and I rather keep the picks

Agreed.  Word is Penny is the 2nd RB over Guice on some team boards.  I think he could be high 2nd.

If we go DB round 1, you have to think if we trade up in Rd 2, it's going to be for an offensive weapon such as one of those top-3 TEs, Penny, Miller, etc.  With our reported interest, I believe Hurst and Penny are our 2 most likely trade up targets.

I can actually see that type of scenario.  If there's a guy we think is a dynamite fit lasts to pick 38-40, we use one of our thirds to trade up to secure him.  Just like DG did with Funchess & Hall.

For me...given this draft class, it's hard to say if it could work out better with a 24, 39, & 85 or 24, 55, 85, & 88 haul.  I think it could work well for us if we stayed put but maybe used our 6th or 7th to move up a few spots in R3.

If we were in a serious trading move, it would make more sense to trade our first and third to move up a few spots rather than to trade our second and third to move up just a bit and snag someone who might still be there.

I'm just not seeing the math on this.

    • They said there wasn't clear evidence to warrant the overturn.  How would it have made a difference at that point in the game?   https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/nfl-privately-admitted-to-erroneous-reversal-of-catch-by-panthers
    • Me, I'm sick of WWE channel hopping their PLEs and shows. Netflix now with Raw. USA still has Smackdown but you can't get it with Roku if you don't also have cable. Then they went from all the PLEs on Peacock to ESPN+ which required upgrading your Disney+ package. Then they frikkin' move Saturday Night Main Event with John Cena's retirement match back over to frikkin' Peacock, which we'd just cancelled two months prior because no PLEs there anymore. And there are fewer, but longer matches and its the same danged stories again and again. Rematch after rematch after rematch between PLEs. Fewer matches, fewer wrestlers, more promos (of lesser quality) and less action.  It just seems like it's all fillers and re-runs. I'm tired of Cody Rhodes. I'm tired of Jey Uso. I'm tired of the two Brons. Shuffle the deck a bit guys, this game's getting stale.
    • Chuba was 3 yards behind the 3 gap. He was lined up weak offset I. It was a 33 dive. Chuba needed to power through off of Ekwonu's block and slip off into the 5 gap where the Tremble had the lane sealed and Rick pulled the LB out of the 5 gap. Here's a visual if you need proof. Chuba did a jump cut laterally to the 2 gap on the right side with unblocked defenders crashing down and went airborne.   This is a 33 dive that should have been slipped off the block into the 5 gap. Chuba lacked vision, but you can see Rico and Bryce staring at the intended running lane sealed off by Tremble and Ekwonu. He should have read Ekwonu's block. The blocking and misdirection is NOT set up for the right side. The play worked. Chuba failed to execute on this play. Trust who you want to, but I wouldn't suggest you argue with the video. Anyone telling you this was drawn up to go right with the blocking did not analyze it. They are correct it should have been a called dive, and it was a called dive.  This was a weak offset I bringing Tremble in motion from the right to the left.
