Put it into perspective: What would have to happen for you to stop being a Panthers fan?

I was born two months after the Panthers played their first game. I have literally been a fan my entire life since my parents immediately adopted the team as their favorite. At this point I think the only thing that could cause me to reevaluate my fandom would be the team moving out west. Until then I will happily sit through whatever drama/ 1-15 season/ disappointing year we may endure.

I’m still a fan, but i no longer care if they win or lose and I expect very little from them.

My sentiments, exactly. I love the game and I'll watch any football game as long as the matchup seems interesting, but I no longer care about the Panthers winning or losing.

My threshold was after the lockout year, the decision by JR to field a crap team that season and realizing after almost 20 years of owning a PSL, that I was being fleeced.

If the team moved or if the owner turned it into a cash grab where no effort was being made to build a contender. Something like the Hurricanes or Hornets, but even then i still support them but i'm not making time to watch games if you can't field a competitive team.

If tepper ends up jordaning the panthers, then i'll take a step back.

I moved from the Carolinas three seasons ago, but I am still a Panther fan.  So, my location doesn’t necessarily matter.  Here most people are Cowboys or Broncos fans, with a few Cardinals fans thrown in for good measure, along with the usual number of people who identify with the Raiders for image.

The Panthers moving could do it, unless they moved to Albuquerque or Colorado Springs.

I’ve always been more of a fan of the NFL fan than a particular team.  But about three years ago my interest in the NFL declined.  There are a number of reasons, none the least of which was I got tired of the lunacy of going to instant replay to look at a catch, and coming to the conclusion that it was a catch but knowing they would overturn it.  When they got to the point that they needed two physicists, a mechanical engineer, and a lawyer to determine whether something was a catch or not, I was pretty much done, other than my interest in the Panthers.

I am more of a Panthers fan than an NFL fan these days, but Panthers games on the tube here are rare.

2017 was critical mass, when my sum total of watching pro football was about three games worth.  Two of those were the Panthers finale against Atlanta and the playoff game against the Saints.  I watched 2-1/2 minutes of the Super Bowl (my wife wanted to see the end of it).  I’ve watched more NFL this year, but not like I did a few years ago.

The league could probably do something that would make me lose interest in the Panthers, by completely losing interest in the NFL.  That may be more likely than the Panthers doing something or me just losing complete interest, since I have been a professional football fan for 50 years now.

And for those worrying about the Panthers organization, I spent roughly the first 20 years of my football fandom as a Cardinals fan.  No discussion of futility and ineptitude at the organizational level can be complete without a serious discussion of the St. Louis/Arizona Cardinals.

Clemson thrashing Bama has me well enough for a long while so meh fug the Panthers if Clemson keeps winning chips I have a team that's won it all so it doesn't matter as much. Same with Basketball, all legit Carolinians have a College hoops team to root for and win one every now and then. (NBA lol though)

If a "cash grab" is of concern kinda surprised you were ever a Panthers fan.

As for "jordaning the panthers"....

....you can rest assured that David Tepper is the polar opposite of (the totally inept) Michael Jordan when it comes to owning and managing a major professional sports franchise --- they literally could not be further apart on the scale of qualified ownership.

Easy.

They’d have to relocate, plain and simple

I mean come on, there’s no damn way I’d be cheering for the LA Panthers (if Chargers moved back to SD or something), Portland Panthers, San Antonio Panthers, St. Louis Panthers,  Los Panteras de Cuidad de México, etc etc

The onnnnnnly chance of the Panthers moving and me still being a fan (to some extent, probably wouldn’t be as diehard).... would be if they moved to Toronto, my birth city. Huge Leafs and Jays fan already, but the Toronto Panthers, now that would be f’n weird.

The Carolina Panthers. /thread.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
