The pre-two minute field goal

Mr. Scot

That was the smartest play in the game.  If we run 3 plays and get a TD or a field goal it goes under 2 minutes and we can only stop the clock 1 time.  They could have ran the clock out when they got the ball back.  Would have needed to have recovered an onside kick to tie the game.

It didn't work, but it wasn't a dumb move.

It played out exactly like Rhule intended and was immediately clear why he was doing it. Unconventional, especially relying on the defense this year, but I really like how he accounted for the gameflow itself (defense stuffing GB all night) instead of just sticking to standard thinking. Even if Slye would have missed I'd still feel it was a good strategy.

And the crazy thing is, the defense actually did their job and gave teddy a shot.

The defense has given Teddy a shot to win at the end in almost every single game. At this point panthers opponents have no reason to fear Teddy at the end of the game.

I thought it was brilliant.

Your defense is playing very well.

You have 1 timeout, so you can stop the clock twice now if you kick it deep--making Green Bay--who will be running the ball to keep the clock moving---punt if you can get them to go three and out.  Odds higher in doing that to a one-dimensional offense than recovering and onside kick.

If you can stop Green Bay on three downs, you get the ball back at the 40 with 1 minute left.  Then we had a penalty and then a grounding call--game over.  However, had those things not happened, we would have had several pass plays to get the ball into the endzone.

If we had gone beyond the 2 minute warning trying to score 8 points, you would have had to try an onside kick.

Good coaching. Good kick. Good kickoff. Good defense. Didn't pan out.

In the end, it gets us closer to a higher draft pick and we got to learn more about how to use our defense.

We played Hartsfield, Chinn, Brown, YGM, Pride, and Roy---I am not sure about Franklin on defense.  That is seven rookies--three undrafted---and two more day 3 picks---getting key Playing Time.   I am happy with what I am seeing.

We seemed to be playing more cover 3 with some variations man underneath at times.  I have trouble recognizing the secondary from the side view that focuses on the offense--but some angles showed a single high safety.  Hartsfield played pretty well and I was glad to see him getting a look.  I was not sure where he was playing though--did not see Elder.  Do not think he played-so maybe Hartsfield took that role--I am trying to remember--maybe someone else noticed.

And they brought Tre Boston up a lot to the line using him as an extra rusher/run stopper. He did pretty well there and our younger coverage guys stayed on their men better than I've seen in a long time. Someone got bright and used the young legs properly and a tackling vet properly as well.

Sure hope they keep this aggressive effort going. The three man rush with eight in coverage thing has killed us all year.

People who understand football understand that it was the most logical call in that situation.   It’s analytics.  Our probability of making that FG then stopping GB (with two clock stoppages) any getting the ball back was much higher than the probability of recovering an onside kick.

Yep. I wasn’t hating it at the time, but didn’t quite understand it. After they explained it was to get an extra timeout basically and ensure we have time left to have a shot at a game winning drive without relying on an onside kick I appreciated the move. We ended up having a legitimate shot to send the game to overtime thanks to that move. Thanks to the QB that was never gonna happen though b
