The Lone Ranger: What to do with Matt Paradis?

Paradis can play out his contract as we address other areas of need. I think we're going to trade down in the draft and pick up a lot of players. Guards, CB, TE, and pass rushing DT are all on the shopping list. Expect Teddy two gloves and Paradis to be back in action next season with an upgraded roster and an 8-8ish finish to the season.

UNLESS.... we land Watson. Then we'll draft LG, C, RG and kick some ass.

Nah, I missed the full price tag.  I saw $4MM.  $10M is meh.  Cheaper than Kalil but definitely in a higher end.

He did play better last year but I'm not excited about him or the 10 mil.  I think he falls into the range of "played well enough that we keep him, cross our fingers he at least comes close to living up to his price tag, and fill more pressing needs while he plays out his contract, then replace with young and cheap."

Paradis was ok last year.  Not great, not terrible.  His contract is on the high end of average, but that isn't his fault.  Similar to the situation with Shaq.  The contract is the problem, not the player.

Unfortunately, for both of those players, we're stuck.  Cutting Paradis won't yield enough relief to bring in an equal replacement.  We'll get a lesser player.  Likewise Shaq.

The focus should be 2022 for us.  We actually are in a REALLY good spot for 2022.  Let's not screw that up by rushing some sort of "win now" team out the door in 2021.  Keep building.  Let's shoot for 7 - 8 wins next year, and keep putting pieces in place for 2022.

When the rest of your line are free agents you don't jettison your only remaining starter to save $4.9 million. It will be difficult to replace him in free agency for that much without dumpster diving, and spending an entire draft on offensive line when we have a half dozen other needs isn't ideal either. Plus a line with 3 rookies is going to have major growing pains. I agree with those saying to draft an interior lineman, start him at guard and consider sliding him to C in 2022.

Also what can't be overstated is that Paradis was very solid last year. He was a nightmare in 2019, but it seems he's recovered well from his injury. Look at Daryl Williams. He was an atrocious tackle for us coming off his knee injury and turned into a decent starting right tackle for Buffalo this year. I guess coming back from a horrific injury takes time. Whoda thunk?

Paradis is not expensive.  He played well too.

He has the 6th highest cash salary next year, that is expensive.

It is pretty simple, if you think he is average or below average you don't pay it because his contract says above average.

To put it in perspective, he is the third highest paid player on our team next year.

Easiest way to look at it, can you replace his production for $8.3m ?

or

What if you can get 90% of his production for $2m a year, and then spend that $6m elsewhere?

It’s not that easy. It’s 4.9 million cap savings first of all, and second you already have to replace the entire line other than center. He’s the QB of the line and has a year in the Matt Rhule/Brady system which is another thing you have to consider when finding his replacement. Look at the FA centers and let me know who you think we could find that would be on the same level for that money.

He isnt the future.  Isnt good, but did play better

BUT, realistically we can't afford to cut him at this time.

Cutting him opens some cap but not a Lot of cap.  And remember, when you cut him, you have to replace him.  And what your going to save really isnt going to find you an upgrade in FA.

We have too many glaring holes elsewhere to really make a focus to draft one.

Its better to bite the bullet and hold onto him for 1 more season

I think this is a key point here. If you're going to cut a guy, you have to be sure you have a better replacement, and that it saves you money. It also helps to have a backup plan if the replacement gets hurt.

With Paradis we:

  • Don't have an equal or better replacement
    • Even if you draft someone there is no assurance they'll be better
  • We don't have anyone behind him at his level
  • We don't have anyone at Guard under contract that he couldn't take over for and be better than under his current contract.
  • Save very little money by cutting him

So you lose a lot and gain back very little. Easy to see that cutting him would be the wrong move.
