It's not that I'd want our leadership to sit around and wait a year on something that might not happen. It's more that right now, our options aren't looking great. The top QBs in the draft are likely going to be gone before we pick, and the FAs and retreads aren't exactly exciting either.

We could have just as good or a better record next year and again be on the outside looking in at the best draftable QBs.

What I'm saying is that in a year, Watson might have served his time on the Commissioner's List or whatever, and he'd still only 26 years old, probably with a year a minimal wear and tear on his body. He's still be really good at playing football. Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill, and Antionio Brown are all still in the league. Two of those guys have rings. I would think the Panthers would take another run at Watson next offseason.

And if it turns out he actually did the things he's being accused of?

Not in the sports world, but think about a guy like RDJ and where he was in 2003 (going to jail if you don't remember) versus where he is now (pretty much beloved and doing some awesome things). Watson should pay the civil judgments, and do his suspension (I'm not aware of any criminal charges). Hopefully, Watson learns from this experience, and has a nice bounce back story.

Hunt, Hill and Brown were all culpable in their cases. All are still playing football. Even our former DE got a second chance with Dallas. Big Ben was accused of some pretty heinous things. He's got rings too.

If Watson needs a fresh start in 2022, I think we could be a good place for it.

Wilson?

That's be my bet. But honestly, there's four - maybe five if this Jones talk is accurate - high 1st round QB prospects. That's a lot of talent coming in. Even taking away my man crush on Wilson, there's just a decent chance that one or more of these guys ends up better than Lawrence whether it's because they're flat out better or their organization does a better job of building around them.

Drugs and partying are not really the same as being a potential sexual predator.

I'd add the latest story from SI makes it look pretty bad for him.

    • Everyone talks about how important it is to draft a QB in round 1 and have the "5th year option" I haven't seen it play out the well over the past several years. The good/great QB' aren't playing the first 5 years under their original deal.  After year 3 or 4 they are getting mammoth extensions. Having Penix take over in year 3 may actually save the Falcons some money over the next 5 seasons. I doubt they'd give him an extension after his first year as a starter if he took over the starting position after the guaranteed portion of Kurt Cousins new deal ends in 2025.   In terms of playing time, Penix 3 years as a starter would be ending with the 5th year of his rookie deal (assuming his option was picked up). The money Penix would be making in year 5 of a rookie contract would be significantly less than the upper echelon 5 year starters are making now.
    • I mean you can see it in his highlights - he has CBs from Yale and Colgate in his hip pocket.  Yes he's making contested catches and moving the chains, but those aren't even P4 CBs and he's struggling to separate.
    • Working for a season under Adam Thielen (another undrafted WR) should be a positive factor.  Some of these issues are correctable.  Many kids from small schools not only lack experience against DI schools, they lack the coaching that develops talent.
