Carolina Panthers wide receivers - Who sticks?

There are currently 12 wide receivers on the roster. The Panthers will likely keep 6.

IMO, There are only three locks.

DJ Moore

Robby Anderson

Terrace Marshall

David Moore

Shi Smith

Brandon Zylstra

  • Omar Bayless ps

Keeping 7 is not a good idea--we may need an extra DB, Edge/DE, etc.  We also have a pass catching TE and a blocking TE--and Ian.  CMC, Chuba, and Bonnefon can all catch passes.  (Bonnefon can also play QB, as Stevens can as well.  Would it be interesting to see us carry 2 QBs, Stevens as the #3 TE, and Bonnefon as the #3 RB?)

Bayless has to make his self available. I think he opted out of last year. But there are too many players. He has to show toughness and a WANT (hunger) for being on that field.

Panthers love competition in every room, EXCEPT QUATERBACK ROOM apparently lol but that's for a different thread

I thought Bayless broke his leg or something in training camp and they liked him so much they saved a roster spot for him, before putting him on IR?

Its possible, but with CMC being the best slot receiver on the team I am not so sure. They really need an extra O-Lineman.

With the injury history of our o-line, I was thinking the same. The good thing is that several of them can paly multiple positions well. I see DJ Moore, Robby Anderson, Terrace Marshall, David Moore, Shi Smith, Brandon Zylstra. with the first 4 as locks.

I see 4-5 locks, not sure about David Moore.

I see Shi Smith on this roster.

Gonna get crazy for a second--give this to me for now:  Anderson (with the addition of Marshall and Smith and Moore) may be more vulnerable than you think IF the cap becomes an issue--maybe a trade for that second rounder in 2022.  Unlikely, but we could clear 8 million, get a 2022 pick, and he is in the last year of a contract.

Let me say this again for all the Cyber Rambos out there---when you have a boatload of players at any position, you have trade value if you need it.  Anderson makes a lot of sense SHOULD THE NEED ARISE.

That IS a bold thought. I was thinking similarly, since he and Marshall have a very similar skill set, but remembered that he and Sam actually had decent chemistry in NY. Might be nice for Sam to have him around, plus, he's a Temple guy.

He did piss off Sir Purr though, so he could be on his way out!

Bold prediction - Shi Smith will turn some heads in camp.  Reminds me of a young Steve Smith based on size, speed and style of play.

I'm actually surprised more people haven't made that connection.  Their physical similarity is eerie.

Unsure if it’s been mentioned in here but I believe roster sizes increase to 55 this year.

I assume the general breakout will be 26 offense, 26 defense and 3 specialists.

Offense is probably 3 QBs, 3 RBs, 3 TEs, 6 WRs, and 9 Oline with 2 extra spots for depth / players front office don’t think will get through waivers.

I know people might disagree but I could see us cutting Shi Smith. We’ve been cutting later round draft picks the last few years and we have so many WRs that I could see him potentially being cut. Kirkwood might make the team because of his experience in the system and relationship with Brady. I think David Moore has a very small chance of being cut. Who knows maybe someone gets injured which will open up the door. Special teams plays a big role in those last WR spots which is why I personally think we keep Smith, Moore and Zylstra. Maybe Kirkwood makes the team and Zylstra doesn’t but personally I think Zylstra is the better option. I don’t think Bayless makes the roster unless an injury occurs. He doesn’t offer anything to special teams.

Only way I see Robby traded is mid season if we suck. It would be a good move then but right now Darnold needs to have all the weapons available to see if he can turn things around.

    • Watching games this year again and Bryce missed a wide open XL many times and some of them were in the endzone. I get the kid has mental lapses and hasn't broke out yet, but this is year three on a rookie deal! Cutting bait now is too early. If he hasn't gained anymore trust from his QB, posted any highlights, little production, or outright gets beat out then we can talk movement.
    • Samesies   I truly may just cash completely out of Panther football if we give him a long term deal that isnt necessary.  I have watched NFL for 50 years now and I can without a shadow of a doubt say you cannot win consistently with BY.  Way too many limitations to deal with.   I may come back around in 3 years when the inevitable happens and all parties are either cut and/or fired.  Giving him a deal before this season so you hopefully can get him cheaper in case he "blows up" or if you truly believe that he will has to be the most moronic decision a gm can make when the evidence is laid before you with different players
    • This is the one! I was at that game and all KB had to do was lay down on the corner after the pick or make an obvious tag while he was down. He had already ran a lazy route. Then if Cam would've just walked to the sideline like most elite QBs instead of trying to make the tackle.  A lot of people bring up the TJ Watt hit, but he just reaggravated a bunch of scar tissue from that play. And every Cam hater said that the running did him in and it was a dive tackle attempt on an interception that initially began the shoulder deterioration. He still went to New England later and would've got them in the playoffs had their A team not sat out the covid year. We quit on him too early. But hey how good was Teddy? Am I right?
