Return guy?

This is a position I’ve hardly heard anyone mention this far through camp.  Other than I believe @Zod mentioning Shi struggling to field punts on of the 1st days.

We have struggled here for several years as well.   Cooper was 16th in the NFL last year for us in PR avg with 5.8 yards per return

i don’t see CMC, DJ, Marshall, Robby, etc returning it.  So who will be the guy? If Shi is struggling to field the kicks,  maybe not him

David Moore?

Honestly, our punt returner(s) didn't get much work last season. I sure hope that has changed.

Still, you'd think by this point we'd be seeing something about an unsung player making moves to be the returner. Just hearing crickets chirp at the moment.

T. Cannon, PR I think the team is looking for a way to get him on the 53 heard he has been working with the WR also and looking decent.

Hubbard, KR has done it in the past and can also get him on the field because we all know CMC not coming out the game much.

PUNT RETURN
Starter: David Moore.

Reserve: Shi Smith.

Moore has gotten the majority of the returns in practice. He returned 12 punts for 111 yards in 2020 when he played for the Seahawks. He should fill the same role for the Panthers, who haven’t found a consistent returner in recent years.

KICK RETURN
Starter: Trenton Cannon.

Reserve: Shi Smith.

Cannon was one of the Panthers’ best special teams players in 2020. He returned 10 kicks for 298 yards, including a 98-yard return in 2020.

Smith’s experience at South Carolina returning punts and kicks should put him in a position to be a backup.

1 hour ago, CRA said:

one day...the Panthers will just draft or bring in a guy that actually returns punts.  Sounds crazy.  But one day.  Maybe a hundred years from now.  They will figure that out.

Returner is a liiiiiittle low on the list when rebooting a roster.

    • And again, when watching him in college he had one distinct trait that I feel makes a franchise QB - on those plays when everything breaks down around him, he creates one on his own.  He doesn’t rely on or need everyone else.  That play last night on the final drive where he was getting sacked and threw it to Diggs before his knee hit the ground?  He does similar things all the time.  Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, etc., they all do it.  It’s what made Cam so special. but we picked a guy that’s the opposite of that.  He desperately needs someone else to make a play for him because he can’t.  Even that play yesterday on 4th down to Horn.  That wasn’t a great pass.  The defender was late and came down to make a play in the ball and Bryce threw it high and outside where Horn had to leave his feet and really use strong hands to catch it.  We relied on a 5’9” rookie playing in his first pro game to make THAT catch at THAT time bc of the early turnovers and a not great throw.  Crazy.
    • This thread is dumb. But I do think canales gets too cute with play calling and I don't think he's a good coach
    • 2 bad teams played yesterday and one lost. Both teams are still bad today. Bryce is a big part of that. It wouldn't have been a close game if DC would have just gone rage rushing from the start.  The Panthers would look so much better with just decent WB play. No way to avoid that fact.
