BOA's new turf takes it's first victim

I am interested to see if the turf causes more or less injuries than the previous field. Or the field not being an advantage anymore.

I remember that 2015 playoff game against the Seahawks and the grass being an advantage that day. The Seahawks came out in the wrong cleats because the panthers ground crew left the grass long or soggy or something. End result was 31-0 at halftime. Either way the Seahawks changed cleats at halftime and almost won the game.

So we have to be careful and not overreact with ignorance like Catsfan before me.  Every injury is not to be blamed on the grass.  You have to look at the whole year and compare with the last few years at BOA.  Then do some advanced math (for some) and see which had fewer injuries.  Then you can start to investigate that hypothesis.

Wasn't our grass/field considered among the worst kept in the league at some point in recent years?

I'm with whoever said it above, I didnt think it would bother me much, but for some reason it does.  That being said, supposedly turf does play faster, so I'm hoping we get that benefit from it...  but it just hasn't made much sense to me to put in an open/outdoor stadium.  And Tepper has the money that cost of maintenance on natural grass is like one of us accounting for our yearly spending on our candy bars.

Aside from cost, is there a benefit of turf?

Maintenance.  Allows the field to be used for other purposes (soccer, college games, concerts, etc.) without compromising the readiness of the field for our games

I posted an article to a sports medicine study in another thread a while back when we first swapped surfaces. The study showed that natural grass caused more lower leg injuries than the newer generation turfs. ......now the old astro turf....that was garbage. Superstition and old wives tales are the only reason people still believe this.

Only thing you could knock against that article is it was focused more on soccer but If i remember correctly they did look at NFL injuries for comparison.

    • Number 9  Carolina Panthers  Bryce Young, the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, produced career highs in completion percentage (63.6%), passing yards per game (188.2) and passing touchdowns (23) in 2025. However, those numbers aren't exactly stellar by NFL quarterbacking standards. Even though the Panthers backdoored their way into the postseason in 2025 as NFC South champions with an 8-9 record, Young's performance was up-and-down. He threw for the third-fewest passing yards by a quarterback to make the playoffs in the last 20 seasons, per CBS Sports Research.  FEWEST PASSING YARDS BY QB TO REACH PLAYOFFS, LAST 20 SEASONS (MIN. 16 STARTS) PASSING YARDS PLAYOFF WINS 2012 Christian Ponder (MIN) 2,935 0 2008 Joe Flacco (BAL) 2,971 2 2025 Bryce Young (CAR) 3,011 0 2006 Steve McNair (BAL) 3,050 0 2019 Josh Allen (BUF) 3,089 0 Young did deliver some high highs, like when he threw for a franchise-record 448 yards passing in a Week 11 overtime win at the Atlanta Falcons and when he went toe-to-toe with Stafford in the playoffs in a 34-31 defeat.  Kenny Pickett couldn't win the Cleveland Browns' quarterback competition a year ago, and Will Grier is a career backup.
