I don’t know who was on waiver wires/FA/trade earlier this year so forgive me for that, I don’t follow football that closely. But I’m sure there is someone who could have competed for the kicker spot and given Slye the competition he desperately needs.

It was a mistake not to bring in another kicker for competition.  I can say that but don't feel the need to say it 50 times a day like Rain Man.

teams have extra players just to add flexibility to the practices (two people practicing returns for example) or to fill out their emergency contact list, just to make sure their preferred guy doesn't go around the locker room sexually assaulting his team mates like charles haley. every team has a different protocol 

the idea that every team brings in competition for their kicker every season is just lunacy.

I don't see Jacksonville, Houston, Atlanta, or Philly being a real threat to grab a kicker on the waiver wire. Detroit probably won't either. So really there's only NYJ and Cinci to worry about.

It only takes one of them to pick up the only good kicker that is dropped to fug your plans.

Be proactive, go get the guy you want. That guy is Jose Borregales.

That’s Rhule however

one min, he is our kicker and the next, not good enough 

it’s like, Rhule, you have a body of work on the guy, you should know who is by now and have made a decision before now

….you know, analytics and all.. 

Rhule’s observations are very fleeting and sometimes he should keep his mouth shut 

loved Teddy, had to have him, until he didn’t and then rest of the NFL knew it and that doesn’t help trades and the draft.

The bad part is that there's a lot, a metric f-ton, of worse kickers out there than Joey Slye, some are already employed or will be before the season begins. And there are maybe a handful of kickers available out there that will prove to be better than Joey Slye.

The worst of it is you won't know who those were until about the midway point in the season. Some guy who has been kicking lights out in the pre-season will get the yips by the third game. Another guy will pull a hammy or tweak a knee the second week in practice. Another one will nail some 50-yarders and every PAT that comes along while the other one can hit anything under 45 yards, but can't reach the end zone on kick-offs. Another guy will be the next Morton Anderson and roll out a 25 year career as a leg for hire. 

It all depends on how willing coach is on risking the known kicker on the roster already. If Slye can get over the yips on the relatively short kicks and PATS, then he's a decent kicker. If Slye can't ditch the problems, then things can go south fast for the team. But do you take one of the unproven guys or a vet that got jettisoned for one of those new guys? 

Helluva situation to be stuck in. Kickers man, amiright?

I think we have seen more than enough of Slye to know he isn't the guy. He doesn't really have the yips. He has been the same guy from college to the NFL, with fairly little variation. Basically a career 70-80% FG kicker. That isn't likely to cut it long term.

We brought in competition and very early on it was apparent they weren't as good as Slye.

One guy I am interested in is the Giants kicker that is probably going to lose out to Gano.  I almost think the rest of the teams in the league are watching that situation to.  We may have to trade a 6th or 7th for him to get him.  Fitts will have to make some trades during the draft to replace that pick.
