I knew CMC had a lot of touches, but yikes....

I hear the folks saying play your best yadda yadda but here's the thing. We got shut out of the end zone for an entire half. If you're going to run your Ferrari like that you better be getting more returns than 19 points. Against the worst team in the league at home to boot.

Carolina has too much talent in their backfield for Christian to be getting over 90% of the RB touches (carries and receptions) week in and week out. Years ago when he was with the Cowboys, Tony Dorsett (a small back like Christian) said Tom Landry rarely let him carry the ball more than 20 times a game. People who remember that era will recall that he shared carries with Robert Newhouse , Preston Pearson, and Ron Springs. In fact he was often on the bench early in his career for 3rd down and Pearson came in as a 3rd down specialty back. Dorsett said he resented it earlier in his career, but he realized later that it prolonged his career.

I'm not saying Christian should be used exactly the same way, but Howard should be able to get 8-10 carries a game (approximately 2 per quarter) to lighten the load without really limiting the effectiveness of MacCaffrey. The latter is so talented, you could play them both at the same time by putting him in the slot and lining Howard up at TB (or vice versa to mix things up). 30 touches a game over a 17 game season could end up being a disaster in the making.

Thirty per game is probably too many like you all are saying.  Twenty seems like the long term sweet spot.  That said if a game or two or three happen where he gets thirty touches so be it.  Lets see if this trend continues against the Saints before we start complaining so much.

Zod as always with the easy layup post to get the hand-wringers and paste-eaters all riled up.

It was the first game of the season, with a new QB trying to get settled in. You have a second year OC with a new QB and shitty offensive line that is trying to get settled in. Darnold/Brady are lucky to have CMC, and will probably lean heavily on him while they gets things ironed out. If he's still not spreading the ball around by game 4, then perhaps there's a problem, but we should be fine in a few weeks.

    • You joke, but hasn't basically the whole team been in Charlotte this past week together? I'm not one to see the random dumb stuff players put out on social media in the offseason and think it means that's ALL they've been doing and not working on their game.  But it's a little strange that all this is coming out at the same time we're seeing tons of stuff with the team in Charlotte together, even if it's just working out and not even official team OTA's or anything. So he gets a pass from me saying anything now, but if he doesn't show clear improvement this season, it then opens him up to some retroactive criticism for some things.
    • Ha-ha, I bet that went through everyone's mind.  Admittedly I don't read all the comments in a thread before I make a post. Great minds think alike!
    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
