Rhule staying, the silver lining

Silver lining, don’t bitch, it’s all we have people:

1. The cap. It isn’t great now but will be abundant in 2023.

1a. Contracts. I believe big contracts/5th year options are due 2023/2024 barring negotiations beforehand. Also, things like CMCs clause etc. The new coach should and will have a say on these. We won’t really be stuck with anyone, at least not for long, aside from Moton and possibly Shaq (who will be restructured).

2. Gutted draft. Between this and the cap…it really could not be a worse starting point for new regimen.

3. Taking into consideration points 1 and 2, this isn’t at all a desirable spot to land as an new HC, added to the fact there is no QB or oline here. There is nothing but a decent defense to sell to upcoming coaches (who care about winning and money) compared to other teams, we’re bottom of the barrel all things considered.

3a. With a great cap outlook in 2023 and all draft picks, and a ton of new NFL coaches this year, next year, we will have better luck finding much needed coach willing to come in a more coach-friendly environment for success. ‘Pick of the litter’ or what have you.

4. Poor QB draft. Next year is much, much better. Along with the cap and another poo season from Rhule, great position for a coach to come in to. In our state as it is, no worthwhile QB will come here and a new regimen will be doomed for a year or forced to reach.

5. Controversial maybe, but I believe it will matter to some coaching talent out there the fact Tepper gave a more than a reasonable amount of time (three years) to Rhule. For a fan this sucks but as a potential coach I think this matters.

6. Fitt or a new GM will finally get their input on the coach. Why you let Hurney have input on a coach and then fire him? Quite the ass backwards blunder. Pretty rare to see this happen, especially with an unproven coach, college at that.

(possible) 7. Tepper learns his lesson. Yet to be seen, but he gains more experience and possibly gets the help he needs to do this right. Hard to not admit some level of failure when Rhule fails again and fans called it the year prior. Smart people learn from mistakes. We must as fans hope for this from our team’s owner. Hopefully we see something here.

Rhule may be here next year, time to accept nothing will be done about this. I feel Tep would be smart to keep Rhule on track in his own ‘process’ and demand results with Darnold, don’t even let him draft a QB.

What’s important now is keeping these silver linings in place.

I feel what is going to be interesting is how much leeway he will have not only on trading future draft picks but also signing players long term/new contracts that a new regimen may not. This will be telling. And for all that’s holy, we can only hope he will be on a very short leash in this regard.

He has enough money to afford all of this. If he is just keeping him around to save face, that isn't gonna work either.

These points are a sunken cost fallacy. What's done is done but leaving Rhule in place means no development for players currently here or other organizational improvements, and that's the main reason ditching him now appears the right move.

The lack of winning is front and center but Rhule's most egregious failures are the crappy roster moves, lack of strategic aptitude, and overall team regression during his tenure. Any coach that comes in and actually shows progress on the latter 3 retains their job even if the winning slowly comes, and all 3 are achievable in most any circumstance... pretty simple.

Truest statement and why I keep saying if you think this year is fuged just wait. By the time Rhule is done we will be back in cap hell with limited picks and a coach who has ran off to the college ranks again.

What new coach? You're assuming that Rhule will be fired during or after his third season. It's better to just assume he'll still be here and being pleasantly surprised if he's fired. Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'entrate should be engraved over every entrance into BOA.

If ownership doesn't set limits Rhule can dig a much deeper hole for thr Panthers to dig out of after he is finally fired. Future draft picks, next year's abundance of cap and contacts trying us to the wrong guys because they were Rhule guys could kill off some of those silver linings.

At the moment Tepper appears MIA. Not good for us in 2023. Limits need to be set on Rhule before the offseason activities starts.

      I appreciate the honesty in your posts--I am not sure Canales is rusing(?) because I don't think we are good enough yet to draft players for depth on day 1.  I do think we are in limbo, fwiw.  At 19, I think you are drafting second rounders in the first.

      We are in a unique situation here. Just my opinion. Three things: Moton’s playing health has been gradually declining as he is aging, while his contract is a drag on the payroll.  Something will give with him sooner than later but I think 2026 could be it.  So.. need a right tackle by 2027. At the latest.    Icky’s individual situation is unique as well. They would have had an extension done by now if not for the injury. We only have him for this year. With no assurance he will ever be the same player.  It would be reckless just to assume. Now we have Walker for one year. And that is a major relief. Maybe he is the answer, but the team that knows him best let him go and it was cheap for us to sign him. So how much did they value him?    We look to be needing two tackles by 2027.  And have poo for depth this year as well. So anyway we could draft a guy for 2027 RT and groom him this year, and see how Icky does, and act as needed in 2027. Spread out filling the two holes over 2 years.    Then I remember, hey if Bryce doesn’t get a Lot more consistent do they extend him? Hoping not, if he isn’t really good.    So then we are looking at the 2027 draft which people say is gonna be loaded with QBs. If we need a LT and a QB what is the pick gonna get spent on?   Taking into account the recovery success rates cited here on the Icky surgery, you might want to plan for him to not be the same player. rather than assume he will be and get caught with your pants down.  It is a tough situation.    And factor in that it is critically important to protect this QB, always, but especially this year where it is said to be make or break. And how you might feel about that.    All of it points to a real possibility that these things converge in the negative, like Bruce sucks and Icky is not the same. In that case if you want to be assured of getting LT secured, the only place you can do that through the draft could be very well be 2026 1st round.     For me, I would like to err on the side of caution.  Cover for these outcomes. It wouldn’t be fun. Added benefit is if we do have a tackle go down this year we will have a guy there. Because I don’t know what we have now.

      I agree. In a perfect world I wouldn’t want to draft another WR, but in this draft it’s fine based on the value of who will be there at #19.  All of the top tier guys worth pick #19 at other positions of need will be long gone. Only exception is Dillon Thieneman, but he’s almost a shoe in for the Vikings as the Harrison Smith replacement. Some posters on here want to draft an OT just to check a box without realizing the concerns and risk that comes along with said player. Sounds like XL to me… desperately drafting need… KC is a pretty safe player.  Produced all 3 years in college and last year in the SEC vs a lot of top corners in this years draft. He single handily dropped the South Carolina CB Brandon Cisse’s draft stock with how bad he abused him.   Sometimes it’s best to try and hit a double instead of going for the home run. This draft screams “go for the double”. Esp in the first.
