Jeremiah: Panthers "dead set" on drafting an offensive lineman

Willis has a lot more upside than Howell and actually some elite attributes.

But...man is the bad stuff bad with him. His bad games are REALLY bad.

Yep. He's one of those quarterbacks that occasionally makes crazy big plays, but the downs in-between those big plays are just horrible. And even those big plays have tended to only show up against weaker competition.

If all you see are the highlight reel plays, you think "Wow, we've gotta have this guy!"

If you look at the whole game tape though, you say "Eeehhh...maybe not."

You take a quarterback like that only when you believe you can coach the bad plays out of them. Even with the changes this season, I have a hard time being convinced that this staff (especially with Rhule in charge) is the group who should be entrusted with that job.

Throw in that we've actually already got two quarterbacks who fit that description in PJ Walker and Sam Darnold.

Would you really want a third?

Two things that bother me...

First, they smokescreened interest in a quarterback last year. They could be doing something similar this year.

And second, that phrase "even if it's a reach" isn't something I like to hear.

Fug it, I'm down.  It would be the smartest move Rhule has made in 3 years....even if he does reach for OT #4 or C #1.

Uh oh, this may mean our fearless leader Matt may be breaking out the measuring tape to personally check some arm lengths. In all seriousness, does anyone actually trust Rhule to judge what lineman to draft in the first place? Maybe he could hand that decision over to someone like Dan Morgan or something?

They are sooo backwards. At 6 you need a scorer.

If they can get 2 picks for that #6, THEN you can get the Olineman we desperately need.

Those top picks are reserved for those who can stop the score or score the ball.

It's like they need football for dummies.

Not sure if you’re trolling or not, but this is flat out wrong. QB > EDGE > OT with the top of the draft. I I’m on mobile, but there have been lots of articles and analyses that show picking running backs and receivers at the top of the first round don’t equate to more wins over the course of a season.

I know what I want the Panthers to do (take Linderbaum at 6 and not look back).

I know what the Panthers will do, though... try to be the smartest guy in the room again and either trade way back and miss the cream of the crop, or take something silly like another DB at 6.

He is probably talking about Penning or Cross being reaches.

Not everyone is as high on Cross, he has him mocked 22,and has us drafting Penning.

I’d prefer Cross out if the two. He is proven against top talent.

This just my positive hat on in regards to "reaching". If they learned their lesson from last year, they thought taking Slater would have been a reach because they thought he might be a better fit at guard and didn't think taking a guard that high would be worth it. I hope this means they are going to take a talent on the Oline and not over think it. You get anchors on the line, period.

But that is me being hopeful.
