How much would you trade for Baker for 1 year rental?

And that's the exact reason we are looking at Mayfield.  Despite Rhule's coachspeak on riding with Darnold, I don't think he's 100% sold on Tepper keeping his word about seeing this through until at least year five.  Rhule knows he needs a winning season and Darnold most likely can't deliver that.  Baker most likely will.

Your not wrong, and this is how bad teams are made. IF Tepper is honest, then we ride the season with Darnold/Corral and see where things lie. If they suck we draft a QB. IF they play good then we are in a good position.

I think 2 things can be true this season. We could have good/great QB play from Darnold AND still lose most games.

We need Fitt to be able to evaluate both.

And I see your argument--Darnold has never had a line, and it shows.  However, I see where people think Mayfield had more upside--we will probably see---but if Mayfield plays well-do you pay him $200m for 5 years?

Baker Passer rating in 2021: 83

Darnold Passer rating in 2021: 72

So to support your point, even injured, Baker did better--but he did have a better OL.  To me, the OL is the difference maker as much as the QB.  We were HORRIBLE last year up the middle.

Statistically speaking, Sam's rating drops when he has more time.  Maybe it's because he is so use to having no time, he freaks out when he does and rushes his progressions.  I think he does good (as do most QBs) when the first read is open.  When it's not he struggles with progressions and wants to improvise with some bad habits.  I watched him get pulled last year and he legitimately looked scared on the sidelines.  When Baker is on the sidelines after a bad series/game he looks pissed off like he wants to go back out there and make a play.  I think Sam is just mentally weak (from a football/competitive standpoint) and even with a good OL won't have much progress.  Baker is almost the opposite where he can be overconfident and get himself into some trouble.  When it comes to scared vs overconfident in a QB, I'll always take the latter.

This means to be said and repeated in the other 397 mayfield threads.

The overlooked part is not Sam vs Baker, or Baker vs Corral, its Baker vs PJ. Ace dickhead Baker would raise the QB talent level. FYI Sam Darnold has never finished a whole season in his career (mainly cause poor OL/coaching). So it's not a deal for Baker taking Sam's "job" or whatever. The main reason is adding talent and Baker is talented, maybe more than Corral&Darnold.... Who knows he may get here and truly click with the city, players, and coaching staff(doubt, but dont know for sure)and want to be a future panther.

Ideally a 3rd but as high as a 2nd if I was open to resigning him.

A lot of people in here are misinformed over just how good Mayfield is. That includes the media. He played hurt all last year and still handily outplayed every QB we had. When he wasn't hurt he brought a garbage franchise into relevancy after 3 decades of suck. Dude is a winner and always has been.

Offer the 3rd, trade the 2nd if you have to. Corral won't be ready to start until next year at the very least, he doesn't need time on the field unprepared, he needs to sit and watch a good QB, that's not Darnold. If Baker is lights out than we have either a great trade commodity in either him or Corral, or a very affordable QB room for a long time.

Do it, and do it now

I agree that he's better than most people think. I disagree he's with that though. His attitude and locker room concerns are LEGIT. That wouldn't matter if he was Patrick Mahomes but he ain't Patrick Mahomes.

A 5th and they pay half his salary. I'd do that. That's worth the risk.

A 5th and the Browns pay no salary.

But they have to take Darnold.

Bear in mind, whichever team has Baker at the end of the year will be entitled to a comp pick. Depending on how he plays, that could be worth a 5th or more.

I don’t think he does and I’m not even a Rhule fan. I just think we get silly in here with the hate and the contradictions, which are amusing. I think if Corral plays and the offense is coming together and they appear to be getting better, Rhule can survive. I mean after the last season he’s still here. We had a pretty talent devoid team in 2020. We just didn’t get better last year and 90% of it was the poo OL and QB. If the OL and QB look promising, I could see him staying with a losing record.

The only way I see Rhule getting whacked is if we begin like we ended last season. I don't really want to put a number on it, but I think if we win less than 5 or 6 games and look terrible while doing it, then these Rhule-needs-to-win people may be onto something. If we get to seven, I doubt that Rhule goes anywhere. Hell, he might be safe regardless.

5 wins, 5 wins, 5 wins….

I don’t see how he can stay employed with that.   That’s making Matt Rhule a coaching unicorn.  I mean saying Rhule gets fired because of THAT isn’t some  Rhule hate stance.  If he doesn’t Rhule basically would stand alone in NFL history.

plus there is the entire stadium, fan, element to it all.   BoA pretty much was done with Rhule by midseason last year.  Hence the Cam PR move.  Which worked.  That saved Rhule’s job. There is no move this upcoming year in the back pocket for Tepper.  Even if Corral impresses the stadium in Charlotte isn’t going to be okay with what would be the 4th straight season under Tepper with 5 or less wins. Rhule has to win more games.   Team has to improve.  Wins are the only real way that shows.

And I pretty much believe the general reporting.   It’s often in the ballpark when it comes to legit reporters.  Tepper isn’t happy.  The contract to Rhule is something he is embarrassed by.   Rhule won’t be sad to leave either when it all ends. And Tepper is already thinking about new coaches in the back of his mind if this is it for Rhule.  All of that has been reported on.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
