McAdoo now gets to work with TWO quarterbacks he wasn't high on four years ago.

It's not every day that you see two quarterbacks who were selected in the top five of the draft play on the same team. What's even more rare is to see two quarterbacks who were drafted in the top three of the same year become teammates before their respective rookie deals expired. 

With yesterday's trade to acquire Baker Mayfield, the Panthers are now home to the first and third overall picks from the 2018 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, both Mayfield and Darnold have not lived up to expectations although Mayfield has shown to be a solid starting quarterback. 

When these two were coming out of college, Panthers offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo was the head coach of the New York Giants. He wasn't particularly high on either Mayfield or Darnold. In fact, he had Mayfield as the 6th-best quarterback in the draft class.

In separate articles by the New York Times four years ago, McAdoo addressed his concerns with each of the quarterbacks that he will now be working with in 2022.

Analysis of Baker Mayfield

“He’s got an edge to him, I like that. He’s gonna lead, they’re gonna follow him,’’ McAdoo said in 2018. “I didn’t see a lot of pro-style football in his college tape. And if you’re short you have to be able to make up for it some way, somehow, and personality doesn’t do that. I didn’t think he was a great athlete. This guy is kinda like a pocket quarterback that is short and with small hands, that’s what I worry about.”

Analysis of Sam Darnold

“I think the kid the Jets drafted has a lot of magic in his game,’’ McAdoo said. “I think he’s special. He’s obviously a talented guy, he can make plays with his feet. I’d just have a hard time drafting a guy in the first round where you don’t necessarily like the way he throws.

“He can overcome it, guys have, but that’s something that’s a challenge for me. I’m gonna be looking at that, trying to fix it, because it’s a fundamental flaw, and I believe in the fundamentals. The quarterback, his No. 1 job is to pass the football. If I don’t like the way he throws the ball, I have a hard time picking him, right?’’

People are reading WAY too much into this. It's a scouting report based solely on their college tape. Baker has already shown to be a lot better in the NFL than McAdoo thought he would be and if Ben didn't want him at this point I highly doubt Baker would be here right now. Plenty of coaches/scouts opinions will change on players after they've seen them in the NFL and plenty of them are significantly wrong on their college scouting reports.

This goes to show that actual quarterback performance  in the NFL doesn't always reflect how a QB does in college or is dependent solely on their physical attributes. Sounds like McAdoo needs to stay OC and leave the college prospect analysis to others. But what does he honestly think now?? Unlikely to know with all the coach speak that fans gobble up like the truth. But Baker has been to the playoffs and can deliver under pressure. Healthy he is a real asset. I think his ignominious  retreat from the Brown may give him some humility.  I said we are going to make some noise this year and with Baker we have it.  This might even challenge Darnold given he has never been seriously challenged to be the starter over his short career.

      Exactly.  You let him play out next season and continue to develop Thorton.  Jackson’s earned his next contract, but his age and the risk of tying up such a large portion of the payroll at one position leads me to believe that we’ll let him walk. In all likelihood, we’ll draft another CB, or two, and bring in some journeymen to fill the roster void, between now and the start of the 2027 season.  That’ll create more balance financially across the roster enabling us to invest in other areas.

      As far as the NFCS … I think this division will be hotly contested the next couple of years.   I am tending to pay more respect to both Atlanta and the Saints n terms of how strong they will be moving forward, than not.    I am mixed on Ryan but think they have a decent roster to start with. I don’t think he blundered hiring Stefanski. And that offense can be dangerous with a QB. Plus, defense is arrow up. No 1st round pick, WB issues will dull their effectiveness. Question is, to what degree?   I think Moore is going to be a good HC and can overcome tape that people have on Shough. They need a lot but they were playing with people. Just the way you want to see all the way to the end.    Not sure about Tampa they have Mayfield but I don’t think they can maintain their success and Bowles is not going to last much longer. They have to go through all that. Gonna be tough once it starts. Might already have started.    For us I feel pretty good about Morgan. But less so about our offense, we have some short term RB and OL issues and those things are critical given what we are working with at QB.  Overall, mixed. Like a lot of what I see but some major question marks remain.

      Absolutely. If we are talking about a 20 year old youngster. He's a grown-ass man, and he doesn't know what his job entails or how to do it? Maybe he will be better next year! It's the Panther way.
