Re: Last year's defense

The defense has some good players but was never particularly good. The fact that the offense sucked giant ass probably had something to do with that.  Constant three and outs, stalled drives and turnovers after the first five minutes of the game. Not knowing how to make any adjustments is killer too. The talent on defense should be enough to make it at least league average.  Lack of any sort of awareness or ability to do anything other than stick to the game plan coming in really sinks both sides of the ball. We could have the most talented roster in the NFL and fhule and snow would get them to about 7 wins

Carolina frequently had a strong first driven that resulted in some points. It was everything after that first drive that was Rhule-esque lack of strategy and inability to stay competitive.

That would actually be on the offensive coordinator.   Its not the head coaches job to make in game adjustments to the offense.  If anything he had more fingerprints on the scripted plays to open the game.   The ones that actually worked.

Seems like a failure to make adjustments.

The league figured Snow out and he couldn't counter.

Good players, especially since we concentrated our draft and free agency on defense the first two seasons.

That's all that kept us even mildly competitive.

It’s not as easy as letting the defense off the hook because the offense sucked.

In 2020, a lot of people made the assumption that if Teddy has just finished our last drive, we would have won 4-8 more games.  What they failed to consider is if Teddy finished that last drive with more than about :45 to go, there was a decent chance the defense was going to give it right back.

I’m not sure last year was any different, other than there were a lot less potential last drives to finish because the games were out of hand.  We didn’t create turnovers or enough negative plays.

So, yeah, the offense often left the defense on the field to rot and put them in bad situations, but I’m not convinced things would have been much better had neither of those things been the rule.  It is an assumption I am not willing to make.

I think Snow is pretty good at getting an under-talented defense to perform over their abilities.  The problem is that I don’t think he knows what to do we a defense with reasonable talent in the NFL.

...they couldn't stick when it really mattered in the game... Think Wilks will be a good voice...at least when he called a blitz you could actually tell it was a blitz...ur azz better be in shape when you play for him.

If burns and reddick finish their sacks on about 4-5 particular drives…. This is a non issue right now. Our defense definitely didn’t get the support from The offense last year but also had moments of looking like Swiss cheese.

Eisen said recently that some of the greatest defenses aren’t always tie to a game plan, Dc or even great positional players…. It’s tied to that one player that gets you the ball back when it matters the most.  Burns and Chinn need to be those guys this year

Any defense is going to start to cave if the offense is generating consecutive 3 and outs across 4 quarters.

Football 101

Obviously, our defense had room for improvement, but it was going to be hard to succeed being on the field all the time. When you keep putting the opposing offense on the field in the NFL, most will start scoring points.

That's because our offense scored on the first possession and then took the afternoon off.

That is not a defensive stat.

Yeah- Our first set of scripted plays for the first drive seemed to mostly go well. Our offense just couldn't do anything later that required coaches to adjust and react accordingly in games. Add that to poor situational football pretty much and we really struggled.

    • Ha-ha, I bet that went through everyone's mind.  Admittedly I don't read all the comments in a thread before I make a post. Great minds think alike!
    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
    • I don't think Canales has any problem benching Bryce or moving on if Bryce doesn't come out playing like the end of last year.  It's year 3 no more excuses for Bryce
