Maybe I'm crazy but seems to me like we should want Sam getting reps in practice and in pre-season games hoping that he looks good enough and that he is legitimately competing closely with Baker so that maybe a QB desperate team will take Sam off of our hands. If you want to sell a car you don't park it in the garage.

You park it in the garage if you know it will die if you try to move it into the driveway or onto the street, and then, while it is sitting there, leak oil and coolant like a sieve.

Right now, even if Sam suddenly looked like he knew what he was doing out there, given his four-year history in games, the best anyone would offer up for him is probably a conditional 6th or 7th, provided we eat all but maybe a token amount of his contract.  To use the car analogy, we are trying to sell Sam for parts.

We worry about being nice and singing Kumbuya in the parking lot in what is a rather cut-and-dried business based on performance.  Most other teams make roster moves as soon as they determine somebody is not part of their future.  In this case, it is not like we are dealing with somebody that may have fetched a first to fourth round pick in return, but his status is in doubt due to an injury or sudden down year.  Showcasing that person may get some of their lost value back.  Darnold is not that person, and trying to prove he is takes reps away from others whose value or potential is much higher.

Read yeasterdah that PJ and Corral are splitting reps at 3 apiece.
Why is PJ still on this team? Corral could have 6 reps instead of 3 if Rhule would get over his obsession with Walker.

Have you seen PJ’s knees? He’s definitely putting in the extra work to earn the position. 😉

so why bother with the theatrics.

Its the NFL, there's a lot of theatrics.  With Baker "winning" the competition he will have "walked on" yet again to win another position on a team.  There's probably some truth to it as well.  It was possible that his injuries, combined with his "tweaked" throwing motion may have impaired his play.  The NFL has a lot of theater and story telling.

I'm not sure what Baker was doing there? That looked intentional to me.

Interestingly, the Darnold and Corral misses were almost identical, except that Corral was a laser, but location-wise they were almost in the same spot, and both were very close to the target, off by the thickness of the football about.

    • Kon is a damn stud but it’s not any individual player’s team. All of the “big 3” are incredibly and equally important IMO. And LaMelo makes Kon way better (look at his shooting splits with LaMelo on the floor vs without. Also Moose and even Miles are important cogs. Honestly think we’re 1 piece away from being legit top contenders if the young guys continue to develop the next year or two. I trust this FO to be patient to find that piece within the next 2-3 years and not force anything. Plenty of time and even without adding anyone we have the pieces in place overall already to compete with any team.
    • We lost 2 very close and winnable games against top teams in the league while missing 3 critical players despite 2 of our top 3 players shooting unusually terribly. Still split the 4 games that Moose and Miles were suspended, winning the most important one vs the Hawks. This ain’t yo mama’s Hornets man. Hopefully Coby can go soon but even if not Moose and Miles are huge additions for our starting lineup and bench rotations. Schedule is pretty tough after these next 4 but I think we’ll take care of business the next 4 to get to .500 then finish slightly above .500 after that to get a 7 or 8 seed. Keep it rolling boys. Also Kon is having an insanely historic rookie season as a shooter. Like truly can’t believe my eyes watching this kid level of historic. Man what a fuging home run of a draft pick and exactly what this team needed to take that next step forward. He’s gonna shatter the rookie 3 point and franchise 3 point records. Has a real chance to be the 2nd best 3 point shooter ever or dare I say even get to Curry’s level (as a pure shooter, Curry obviously has way more to his game that has made him a GOAT).
    • I hear you but yeah like you say, above average. His numbers were good. You’d think it would be a no brainer. Anyhow… I guess the new staff is also fine with him walking?    I hope if we sign him there isn’t some secret issue of his that led to him not being valued.
