Albert Breer on Rhule's job security

From Justin Mason (@Masonjt24): Matt Rhule out as Panthers head coach if the Panthers don’t make playoffs? #KeepPounding

Justin, obviously, Matt Rhule would have a hard time, like any NFL coach, surviving three straight playoff-less seasons. But there are two reasons to think David Tepper might remain patient. One is what’ll be left on Rhule’s seven-year, $63 million deal at the end of the year. Two is that this was a very big swing for Tepper, and it’s pretty clear he doesn’t like to be wrong.

So yeah, in all likelihood, the playoffs will be the barometer. But if the team’s up and down early and catches fire late but just misses the playoffs, based on how invested the franchise has been in Rhule, I could see there being a path to him surviving it.

In all seriousness, there's almost nothing he can do to get fired this season or next. Record doesn't matter.

Breer thinks it's at least possible, but I know the comments about Tepper "not wanting to be wrong" aren't something anybody wants to hear.

Tepper does know that even if you, personally, do not admit you are wrong everybody else knows. You can lie to yourself all day long, but we all know whats up.  This is assuming we have another terrible year....which I am not so sure is going to happen.  Maybe im being a homer, but I really do think they are going to turn things around this year and at least battle for a playoff spot.  This is not a team bereft of talent.

translated more simply:

Rhule should be gone.  But Tepper is stubborn and made a bad deal, so he might stay

I would not be surprised if any improvement is used as the reason to retain Rhule. Yeah, we went 7-10 but that's improvement and we expect to be in the playoffs next year with Matt Corral next up on our neverending QB carousel.

I think it depends on what happens.

If we stay healthy and go 2-15, Rhule will be gone.  We will all celebrate.
If we go 7-10 after being decimated by injuries (Baker and Ikem go down for instance) Rhule will probably stay.

Sam's putrid play cost us 2-3 games last year.    If we had won 7 games, there might be fewer torches and pitchforks.

    • Looking like it might be game 7 for Pitt and Phi. Philly is spent. I like more rest for the canes
    • Moton is the man through and through. 2 things I'll always give Gettleman credit for, 1 is drafting Moton, the other is building a SB contending roster and blowing it up in one off-season
    • Kurb is still alive and well.  I’m still friends with him on all of the social media.  He truly is a great man!  That’s my bro!  He always looked out for me since the early days of the huddle.  It definitely makes me sad that he just quit posting here, but that’s life.  He still shares his takes on social media and X, but a lot of the huddle vets just grew tired of this format and the environment, I guess?  It’s a lot of guys that were valuable contributors here that just stopped posting but are still alive and passionate Panthers fans.  Blindsite used to post huge write-ups and was a well-respected poster and then just disappeared.  We had one of these type threads several years ago and he checked back in and explained he just lost the motivation to stay active here.  It was amazing hearing from him again…   I signed up in 04 after coming over from the Charlotte.com boards and been here ever since.  (For those that don’t know - this is Proudiddy - had to change the name very recently due to ‘ol tootsie roll penis and the bad press 😂).  I’m forever thankful for all of you, even those who I haven’t had the greatest history with, I still appreciate yall.  Many have come and gone, both figuratively and literally, and that has put a lot into perspective over the years.  I went from a young, newly married, wide-eyed twenty year-old guy with a baby on the way, to a now forty-two year-old guy, recently divorced and newly re-married guy with my oldest baby now an adult and 5 more kids since.  And what ride it has been!  You guys have been a much bigger part of my life than I really care to acknowledge.😂
