Besides Rhule what are your concerns for the season?

I will start.  A couple of the regular spots I feel better about this season.  Qb play I think will be average at worst which is a good step up and I feel good about our rb depth if/when CMC goes down.

1.  The oline geling and their pass blocking specifically.  On paper its much improved but it's a question mark for now.

2.  Our dline in general.  Can they get pressure besides Burns?   We have the secondary to cover but how long will they be covering for?

3.  How will our interior D line and lbs be stopping the run?

4.  Our schedule is pretty brutal.   Not many easy games on there at all outside of division games.

I agree with everything listed.  To sum it up, we have a lot of unknowns right now.  That is not all that unusual with a young team.  The people who looked promising in year one looked less so in year two, and they need to regain their stride.  Some of that is related to how they are used and what they are asked to do vs. their strengths (coaching and game planning).

Both lines need to come together.  On paper, our OL looks much improved but paper doesn't do much in the NFL.

  • CMC needs to stay healthy
  • The LBs need to be "refreshingly good"
  • Mayfield needs to shake off last year's injuries and build on 2020
  • The WR corps needs to not disappear
  • The TEs need to be noticeable, especially in goal line and short-yardage situations
  • The secondary needs to be as good as we think they are
  • The defense in general needs to create turnovers
  • The offense needs to stop giving the ball away

The rest is coaching.  Game planning, adjustments, putting players in positions to succeed, etc.

If they can get to where they should have been last year, which is probably around .500 and be in the playoff hunt, I'll be content.  Chalk 2021 up as a loss and move ahead.

If not...

Heads will roll - Heads Will Roll - quickmeme

Or, at least, they should.

Aside from Rhule the entire coaching staff is a question mark for me.

On defense, it's clear to me Phil Snow is not an NFL caliber coordinator. His main NFL experience prior to becoming an NFL defensive coordinator was being the LB coach on the 2008 Detroit Lions who went 0-16. Many other coaches the Panthers have played have lambasted his "college stuff" scheme. The defense was far worse than it appeared on paper (that #2 overall yardage statistic was an anomaly), in particular the run defense. I've never seen his defense just beat their opponents 1 on 1, it's all stunts and misdirection. Then a team with a quality O-Line comes in, bodies them up, and mauls them. I think the only coach Phil Snow has figured out is Kliff Kingsbury.

On offense, Ben McAdoo was out of football for several years and had a hard time breaking back in. Seems like there were some solid reasons for that. We'll see if he has anything left. McAdoo absolutely deserves a head coaching job if he's able to coax a playoff caliber season out of Baker Mayfield or (gulp) Sam Darnold. I'm also not a fan of Sean Ryan from what I've seen. I'm not really sure how much coaching he is actually doing. He was a holdover from the previous offensive coordinator so who knows if McAdoo even has work for him to do.

So we'll see how that all pans out.

    • Just going off the draft sims and he's always sitting around 20 lol. First year in a while where we haven't been thinking about the draft already in late October so haven't really looked into the top 15-20 picks yet. Also the qb class is super weak so he probably will sneak up into 10-15
    • I fully expect them to pick up his 5th year , and they're waiting for him to put a full excellent consistent season of QB play in year 4 or 5. If that don't happen,  they'll eventually cut ties.  Here's to hoping he just goes on a team in 2026. The worst thing he could do is continue to see-saw us to around .500 records because it might be impossible to replace him at that point unless youre willing to do the veteran qb carousel poo we did from 2019 to 2023.
    • What do you think of Bryce Youngs career thus far? Are you excited about his progress or is it not enough for you? I included a poll of ranking his performance through 3 years thus far.  I personally think he's made some decent progress. Has had some high moments (last half of 2024, Rams game, ATL game in 2025)  but in my mind, those are still outweighed by the many more lowlights thus far (ex turnovers, missed throws, poor decisions)  It's a very mixed bag for me. He's done enough to get a 5th year option but by no means should we lock him in with a 50+ mil a year multi year deal. I want to see him play consistently well for a full year before that happens (yes, I'm still saying that going into year 4. That might be telling).  Just sucks when you see CJ Stroud, Jayden Daniel's, Caleb Williams almost immediately lighting poo up with their arm talent. Maybe Bryce is just an ultra slow burn. I don't know what to think anymore. Guess we're gonna be stuck with him for a whilr unless we end up being bad enough to earn a high pick next year. I doubted it lol. Overall Stats for his career:       ● 14 W - 30L (regular season)       ● 0-1 playoffs record        ● 61.4% completion, 8291 passing yards, 49 TDs, 30 INTs  Year 1:       ● 2 wins, 14 losses      ● 60% completion rate, 2877 passing yards, 11 TD to 10 INTs, 5.5 yards per attempted pass Year 2:        ● 4 wins , 8 losses        ● 60.9% completion rate,  2403 passing yards, 15 TD, 9 INTs,  6.3 yards per attempted pass  Year 3:        ● 8 Wins, 8 Losses         ● 63.6% competition rate, 3011 passing yards, 23 TDs to 11 INTs  Playoffs         ● 1 game in year 3 ( 0 - 1 in playoffs)         ● 21/40 (52.5% completion rate), 264 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.
