The Run D Problem: Scheme, Personnel, or Both??

from the stands yesterday it looked like the problem was mostly linebackers. they were running sideline to sideline and we just did not have the speed to keep up with chubb

From my spot in the stands our players on defense are absolute track stars.  Not sure if that's honestly a good thing.  Way too many people bouncing off of other people really fast.

I believe our gameplan should always be stop the run first. Our secondary is probably one of the best on paper. We should be daring people to throw on us. So I believe it falls on coaching

Scheme is a failure in the NFL and the players are mismatched. The Dline should be more size and power yet it is small and fast.

Both. And the buck stops with Matt Rhule and Scott Fitterer who on any given day can be either just Rhule's lackey or a real GM based on who people are looking to blame.

Tie up Thompson, put someone on Chinn and you can run on us all day long because our D-line can get scrubbed away by your basic five linemen on any run play.

No LBer would look good behind this line. Even Luke was damn near nulified by a weak run stoping line in another mismached D scheme before he retired.

We've been told that Phil Snow is capable of running the defense out of a 3-4 or whatever alignment he deems best.

Personnel definitely plays a big role.  They are undersized and fast for the most part.   When they started stopping the run it was because they were selling out to stop it.    Also it seemed to help a lot when we brought the new guy in near the end.  Also our lbs in general were nonexistent it felt like.

A big problem is we have a player like Derek Brown who has not lived up to even the slightest of expectations. He is approaching Vernon Butler, Terrell McClain, and Simone Fua territory. A big miss from the Panthers.
