Let’s talk about Shaq and YGM

Most people on the board are aware of Shaq’s age and financial burden on the team. Trading him or cutting him makes sense this off-season. Especially with Luvu,  Smith, and whoever we may bring in with draft capital we may acquire for him. What would be a good deal for Shaq?

YGM has never really turned into the Mike Rucker people thought he would be. (Look at his production and 46.5 PFF grade). Edge rushers are valuable, especially young ones with rookie contracts. What kind of compensation do you think the Panthers would get for YGM?

Shaq is an overrated JAG who is insanely overpaid. Looking forward to moving on from that bloated contract. He has never lived up to his hype and simply isn't a difference maker. You could argue that Luvu has impacted the outcome of our games more this season in his first year at LB than Shaq has his entire career.

YGM is another JAG (at best) but at least he's on a rookie deal. Decent depth I guess but doubt we'd even notice if we moved on from him.

edit: inb4 top dawg slams me.

The biggest problem with Shaq is his contract.  It was another example of Hurney thinking that if we pay a guy like he is one of the best, he will become one of the best.

With RA gone, Shaq is the third highest salary next year and, if I am not mistaken, provides the biggest cap relief.  Of course, dumping/trading him is only one solution to that problem.  We have the rest of the season to figure out what options are worth it, unless somebody pushes a lot of chips into the center of the table for him.

Shaq 28 years old OMGz so old

He will be 29 next season- about the same age as Kuechly when he retired. Thomas Davis lasting as long as he did was an anomaly and partly due to him not taking hits on his body for 3 years due to his ACL issues.

Yeah, pretty much. Shaq is okay. He wouldn't be a problem if he was paid like a run of the mill starting LB but he's nowhere near the difference maker he's paid to be. I have no idea why the Panthers organization has always thought so highly of him as a player. I've never seen any signs of a special player.

    • Just going off the draft sims and he's always sitting around 20 lol. First year in a while where we haven't been thinking about the draft already in late October so haven't really looked into the top 15-20 picks yet. Also the qb class is super weak so he probably will sneak up into 10-15
    • I fully expect them to pick up his 5th year , and they're waiting for him to put a full excellent consistent season of QB play in year 4 or 5. If that don't happen,  they'll eventually cut ties.  Here's to hoping he just goes on a team in 2026. The worst thing he could do is continue to see-saw us to around .500 records because it might be impossible to replace him at that point unless youre willing to do the veteran qb carousel poo we did from 2019 to 2023.
    • What do you think of Bryce Youngs career thus far? Are you excited about his progress or is it not enough for you? I included a poll of ranking his performance through 3 years thus far.  I personally think he's made some decent progress. Has had some high moments (last half of 2024, Rams game, ATL game in 2025)  but in my mind, those are still outweighed by the many more lowlights thus far (ex turnovers, missed throws, poor decisions)  It's a very mixed bag for me. He's done enough to get a 5th year option but by no means should we lock him in with a 50+ mil a year multi year deal. I want to see him play consistently well for a full year before that happens (yes, I'm still saying that going into year 4. That might be telling).  Just sucks when you see CJ Stroud, Jayden Daniel's, Caleb Williams almost immediately lighting poo up with their arm talent. Maybe Bryce is just an ultra slow burn. I don't know what to think anymore. Guess we're gonna be stuck with him for a whilr unless we end up being bad enough to earn a high pick next year. I doubted it lol. Overall Stats for his career:       ● 14 W - 30L (regular season)       ● 0-1 playoffs record        ● 61.4% completion, 8291 passing yards, 49 TDs, 30 INTs  Year 1:       ● 2 wins, 14 losses      ● 60% completion rate, 2877 passing yards, 11 TD to 10 INTs, 5.5 yards per attempted pass Year 2:        ● 4 wins , 8 losses        ● 60.9% completion rate,  2403 passing yards, 15 TD, 9 INTs,  6.3 yards per attempted pass  Year 3:        ● 8 Wins, 8 Losses         ● 63.6% competition rate, 3011 passing yards, 23 TDs to 11 INTs  Playoffs         ● 1 game in year 3 ( 0 - 1 in playoffs)         ● 21/40 (52.5% completion rate), 264 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.
