Denver = sucks but we scored on a good D; lol at their offense.

Seattle = doesn't suck but not world beaters and down 1st and 2nd rbs

Pitt = sucks

Detroit = losing record not indicative of decent team (tickets to be had for $25)

Tamp = sucks

New Orleans = sucks. (tickets to be had for $16).

So we win 5 out of 6 with no wins vs. a decent team.

Fair but this season is also weird in that there are hardly any good teams.

At this point Wilks is a part of the team’s DNA, and has been largely for the last decade. The players are responding to him, the team is swinging way above its weight class with mediocre talent, and there simply isn’t a deep pool of possible coaches to pull from.

Wilks deserves a chance, a real one. An opportunity to get 2-3 years to build a franchise in his defensive image. It wouldn’t be a sexy hired that would garner lots of national buzz, but the best coaches rarely do when the dust settles.

The Patriots won six titles beating the bums in their division. It was literally six games every year except for the two years the Jets were good and a couple of Bills losses. How can it be a negative to win the games on your schedule? If you are going to argue against the man coaching, at least don't move the goal posts.

I'm torn on this.

On one hand, there's no doubt that Steve Wilks HAS earned the job. Given the circumstances he's done far better than anyone should have been rightly expected to and there's no question he has shown the leadership ability to be an NFL head coach and is loved by the players. However, I'm still not sure it's the best move for the franchise long-term.

The fact is we're almost certainly going to be drafting a QB next year in the 1st round. Whether it's by staying put and seeing who falls or by trading up and giving up a bunch of future draft picks to do it. Whatever else we do this offseason we MUST get this right and that starts with putting a staff in place that can develop whoever this QB is going to be.

Frankly, I'm not very confident in Wilks in this regard. I certainly trust him with the defense and developing those players, and his approach to the run game has certainly worked. But when it comes to QB - especially if we miss out on a more pro-ready prospect like Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud - we really need a staff who is capable of developing whoever we pick and in that regard having a defensive-minded HC is going to be, I fear, to our detriment.

Let's say we miss out on Young and Stroud and instead end up picking a raw "tools" QB like Anthony Richardson. Would you rather have some failed former HC-turned-OC and/or QB coach developing him while Wilks oversees from a distance or would you rather have a young offensive mind like Shane Steichen as HC having a hands-on role in developing him as our new franchise QB and building an offensive scheme designed to get the absolute most out of him?

If I knew we could end up with a pro-ready QB like Bryce Young then I'd be much more supportive of Wilks as the long-term answer. I just worry that having a defensive-minded HC will limit our ability to develop a less NFL-ready option, which is looking more and more likely like what we're going to end up with.

Here is the other part of this equation

what parts are working that can be fine tuned are. The defense. Special teams and OL

Parts not working is the qb, offensive scheme, improvement needed in TE and WR personnel

why would the Panthers cut out the part that isn’t working and fix it vs another wholesale change

being a first year HC is difficult. Haven’t we seen that show enough?

wlks fits this franchise and this area.   If he wins 2 of the last 4,he has more than won this job

I think if he has a good plan for the OC position this job is his.

Well said Natalie.  I agree. Also..nice getting your write up in USA today!

Wilks has had command of the team from the start.  He has made the changes that he could and the team is better for those changes. He seems to have a high football IQ.  He is taking what he was handed and transformed the team.  Imagine if he has the chance to make decisions about his staff.  Not just firing the bad eggs but bringing  in some good assistants.  With the direction Wilks has this team going this should be an attractive job for a good OC candidate.

I don't get this place sometimes. If we win a game it is because they sucked, if we lose a game it is because we suck. Wilks is automatically a Rivera/Fox clone. Wilks isn't an Xs and Os coach. We will be out-schemed. All things that are opinion/speculation based, stated as fact.

Wilks, because he is a Defensive Coach is going to be unable to fill out a proper Offensive staff, is another one.

The way the team is playing, you have to give Wilks his due. And if we continue to win? Things are gonna be right interesting up in here.

There are a whole bunch of ppl excited for Panther football right now. Been a while since we could say that with a straight face. lol And a large part of the credit HAS to go to Wilks. IMO

But they’re not speculation/opinions, there is plenty of evidence based on historical facts and examples from being HC already.

Your measuring stick is Rhule, and what he brought to this fanbase, as evident by what you’re saying so your opinion is already kind of skewed. This board always has these bipolar, exception to the rule and larger sample of evidence takes/reactions and this is one.

And I personally would rather have a defensive coach.

But barring a playoff win, I do not think the best coach available for the job miraculously also happens to be our interim HC.

I think he should get a strong consideration and very well may be the best guy teamed up with McAdoo. Still there can't just be a default you get the job kinda thing. Wilks has definitely proven enough to get a consideration but so has many others guys out there right now.

    • I would take it over this clown show! The fluff is not working on me this offseason, didn't the last two either. You can tell a shitty boss has and is still meddling and micromanaging, but it's a business where he makes profit whether he puts out a good product or not so we're kinda fuged as fans

    • Looked for a Tepper thread to ask this. Did people know that when Ben Navarro was still in play to buy the team, he asked John Lynch to run things for him?  Listening to a Lynch interview he makes the claim (really bored, but hey, I never hear that one).
