Can Sam Darnold play himself into becoming the 2023 starter?

This is a comfortable take once you completely ignore that he’s been a “good player in the NFL” this season. That’s what has made this decision tricky. If Darnold is held back a couple years in high school or gets COVID years in college, this would have been a nice rookie year for him. You point to his years in the NFL as a negative, when really he’s developing on the biggest stage while other guys his age were still playing college ball.

I’m not completely sold yet, but he has brought me back from ‘no longer under consideration.’

I don't really understand how you got to him being a good player in the NFL this season but I guess that is your prerogative.

It would be a very bad sign for the franchise for him to return in anything other than a lowly paid backup player in 2023. Almost every other scenario is extremely bad for us as a team and franchise.

But, it would be a very Panthers thing to make that mistake.....again.

He has had 1 "good" (and I use that term loosely) game out of 4.  WTF are you people watching?

To bump this thread up :

If he is re-signed (hopefully to just backup money), I would not be surprised if he starts next season while we draft a young QB who would sit, watch, and learn about the NFL game.

I mean...having a young QB just start right off the bat straight out of College doesn't often translate into success.

I’m all for Darnold being the bridge quarterback.

After what I saw today, he seems to be turning the corner.  I think I would sign him for next season and forget giving up 3 firsts or paying $50m for a veteran free agent.

I would have to see the numbers, but we REALLY need a TE.  We could use a S.  We need healthy CBs.

I'd love a TE and a #2 WR. Bump Marshall to #3 and you're cooking.

Both polar extremes of this are dumb IMO.

Nothing about Darnold's overall body of work should guarantee him anything next year.

That being said, Darnold has been playing the best ball of his career over the past month and has been top 10 or higher on almost all advanced metrics. He's only 25.

To just let him walk without seeing if he can build off of that next year is folly too IMO.

Darnold will be on a roster next year. If we are going to draft a rookie, then why not have him on our roster to be the bridge guy (or longer). I would hope Darnold would like some stability after his turbulent NFL career so far and would take a high-end backup type deal. I don't see the logic in signing a high profile veteran and then taking a QB high in the draft after just using a 3rd on Corral along with all the other draft capital we've given up for QBs.

Otherwise, we need to cut bait and try to sign a veteran like Carr that will cost more. Then there's no need for Darnold and we keep and develop Corral.

    • Well bois, we gave the Devils their due! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... The jersey boys have been trying to jack our steeze for a few years now. They've followed our blueprints and studied our tape. Every offseason, they pounce on our sloppy seconds in a Newark minute. Quick with the puck, ferocious on the forecheck and stifling team defense. Down to the colors, this is this closest we'll come to having to play ourselves in Ole Stanley's Hockey Hoedown. As the postseason began, Rod stood flexing in the gym mirror and saw this guy staring back from the void... (Shutters) When beating us at our game didn't work, Timo and the Tri-State Trash tried to tango instead. Outside of a bitchass cheapshot on Freddie, that poo didn't work either. Their goon squad was getting wrecked by our bantam weights. As much as we all wanted to see Svechy or Staal Bunyan literally break someone in half after the Great Dane went down, they didnt need to. Our munchkins were monsters! Jarvis obliterating giants at the blue line, Logan laying the Stank on dudes twice his size and Blakers blasting Timo into next season. It was beautiful to see! (Side note: Does JBlo wear lead weights under his pads? 170lbs shouldn't be able to hit that hard!) We closed it out in 5, for the gentleman's sweep. Only team in the league to win a series in each of the past 7(?) seasons! And, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year... Onto the awards: Key To The Series : 6 for 19 - .316% IT FINALLY WORKED!!! MVP : 16/180 g/s - .911 save% - 2.53 gaa Seriously, without this dude, we would've won in 3! (Trust me bro) 3rd Star : 6/94 g/s - .936 save % - 1.59 gaa The Great Dane   2nd Star : 3 g - 5 a - +1 - 20:38 toi/g - 18 hits - 3 bs - 58.1% fo 3 PP goals and the 2OT series winning goal! WOOAAAHHH NELLY!!!!   And, your 1st Star of the series : 5 g - 1 a - +3 - 16:48 toi/g - 16 hits - 1 bs - 1 tk - 50% fo Zero, I repeat, zero penalty minutes for the series! MISSSTAAAHHH SVEEECHNIKOOOV!!!!!! Onto The Next: Now, we wait for the Habs to make it a nasty 7 game slog, while we recuperate. And, hopefully, get Nikishin, and some of the other black aces some real peactice time. We are gonna need those guys at some point. Because, if you think the Devils were dirty, hoooo boy, wait till you see what's next...
    • I don’t watch college football anymore (used to be Stanford STH but meh), but my wife is Hawaiian and her favorite color is purple, so I guess I knew Tet was my new favorite player to root for when he came out in a purple suit and lei and threw up the Shaka.
    • AJ Green is who I think of as well; the body control, fluidity of movement, hands catcher, always high pointing the ball with the occasional insane/acrobatic type of grab, etc
