Worked out great for the Bears. But the difference is, here I believe that’s just coach speak / organization speak. Bryce should not split a single rep with any other QB on the roster.

That’s the advantage of getting a heady(intellectual) QB, he’s not going to have to relearn the game.

We saw last year how "splitting" practice reps between Darnold/Mayfield and making them "earn" their job went. We came out week 1 rusty, players had no connection with each other, o-line missing assignments (because of Rhule's dumbass musical chairs theory), etc. It was just an all around mess.

Let's not overthink this. Let Bryce get the much need reps with the 1s. Let Bryce get a connection with his WRs, center, o-line throughout training camp and preseason. Let's not have to figure this sh*t out weeks 1-4 because we wanted to make him "earn" the job. We are not in a position like the 49ers were with Mahomes to let him sit a year. They had the benefit of already being a very good team. We don't have that luxury, let Bryce learn on the fly.

We did this same thing last year with Icky needing to earn the starting job and starting with the #2s. We know Bryce will start game one, but it's a message to the rest of the team and it shows that he doesn't get any special privileges by starting with 2nd team.  It'll be way more interesting if his teammates vote him captain his rookie year.

If he said Bryce is QB1 without throwing a pass in camp, or playing in a preseason game, or learning the playbook we would all be disappointed.  Even with Cam, he had to earn it in Camp and preseason.  This is how it should be stop worrying about every little thing

This is not the same thing, just stop it

I doubt they’ll be splitting reps. Bryce will get the majority of snaps with the 1s and Reich will say again it’s because Dalton doesn’t need reps. Then well before preseason game 1 Bryce will be announced the starter.  Just roster politics, not worth fretting over.

I think they very easily could have named him QB1 right now without any problem.

When Dalton signed, he was saying that he did it knowing he was here to support the #1 pick as his backup, he doesn't expect to be given a fair shot at winning the job by outplaying Bryce in camp.

Everyone knows that Bryce is our best chance at winning both now and in the future, he needs to get the first snap when the rookies can practice with the vets.  Like others have stated, he needs as many reps with the starters as possible so we go into Week 1 as ready as we can be, not still trying to get on the same page.

They can say that's exactly why he's QB1 right now, but that he still has to go out there and earn the right to keep that job, that if he is just terrible in camp and pre-season, Dalton might have to step in until he's ready.

It's not about the name of QB1 or QB2, it's about the reps with the players who will be starting in Week 1.  Hell, you could say Dalton is QB1 but giving Bryce the first snaps with the starers to get him the reps if you want, name doesn't matter, just the reps.

The put it bluntly, I don't give a poo what fans think of how they approach developing a QB. I will accept what Reich, Caldwell, and McCown think is best in this situation.

There are no games to start now and no real reps until August.

These threads are always so cut, as  fans say whatever they have to say, to justify it, and make it right in their minds.

I'm glad we have an all pro coaching staff that's going to do this the right way, regardless of what we fans think we know better.

    • That's not totally the case. It is hard to discuss future without a crystal ball, you look at the past the to assess and project, and there is a lot of on field negative from year one. Some people say throw it out. You can’t dismiss things that were on him and not the OL or Reich or Chark or Mingo etc., if you want the real story.  Only Young can tell where that goes and everybody just has to wait for real football. That footwork is not just people picking on him, it is probably a huge barrier to his potential success. All the passing comes from a base and if it off the throws are hard to trust.  OTA optimism is fools gold tbh. We have seen the skins and shirts all stars enough times to know what that is. We will need real football at real football game speed which we won’t get even in preseason.  That said I expect him to somehow make his way to somewhere in QB tiers or rankings to maybe low 20s. Gotta win 6 at least for that.  My opinion is if they can make a playoff run with a 4th tier QB then fine but I’d just as soon go over to the side of those who for years held out for a QB capable of talking to and winning a SB. I am not thinking he is that guy so far but taking this year to find out is necessary.
    • Good lawd, look at the amount of rotation required for a mere 40-yard pass. No wonder he needs a runway for any throw beyond 50 yards.  Can you think of any NFL quarterback today who has a weaker arm than Bryce? For reference, with a similar amount of hip rotation, Stroud slung the ball 69 yards. https://x.com/VatorSports/status/1728845724434186374
    • I think the issue is there isn't any more of these posters still active on this site.  Everyone I see posting now either doesn't like Bryce or wants to see him in a better situation to make a better assessment.  I think everyone agrees he has work to do in order to show us he can become the QB we need him to.  Who knows if he will or if he can, but there are definitely other conversations to be had without being stuck on repeat and every thread turning into the same one.  It sounds like you need to find the Bryce Fan Boys from before the draft and just vent/hash it all out with them somewhere.
