At this point in time, who feels like we lost this trade?

They opted to not take Carter and instead took the fourth best tackle in the draft and one that’s purely an RT. I think we pick pretty late next year and could absolutely see Dj doing 2 and out in Chicago. I just don’t see how any Bears fan feels they fleeced us.

Honestly won’t know until 2025. I know it’s not popular, but waiting three years will be the tell all. History reflects the third year is judgment day.

If the Panthers are not in the deep playoffs by then Tepper needs to clean house and hire some advisors ASAP. And quite frankly that’d be eight years of failure and personally, I won’t be watching every game anymore as I suspect many here won’t either. When you get towards a decade of ineptitude, it’s nearly impossible to recover.

That said, I think at that time when Carr is on the backend, it’ll be the Falcons or Panthers to take the lead and the Panthers absolutely have to be ahead. Time will tell.

I think there are actually two questions tied in with this:

1. Did we win this trade, and

2. Did we make the right pick?

The first one is an absolute yes.  We won the trade (although I think Chicago did as well.)  We had to assure a position to get our QB.  We not only got to a point that we could get one of the top QBs, we got to the spot where we could get our choice of any of them.  And we did this at roughly the same cost as moving up to get one of the leftovers.

We made this trade with the idea that we would need to fill a hole created in the loss of DJ Moore.  As of now, I like our WR room better than last year.  We don't have a WR equal to Moore, but close enough plus we upgraded all around including pass-catching TE.  (So it was a trade of "Moore for more.")

We sacrificed future draft picks, but we were doing that anyway and unsuccessfully with our Darnold/Baker/Corral efforts.

So, yes, we won the trade.  But we have to wait to see if we made the right pick with it.

I mean, look at what we gave up compared to what D. Watson was going to cost us.  We get a perverted QB with Salary Cap Issues out the arse and they get multiple first rounders.

This is how you do it.

Crazy to think about that Watson who is super flawed, costed a mega deal, and is older costed just about the same as Bryce. Imagine that trigger had been pulled.

Almost nothing has changed since draft day, heck you could make the argument that nothing changed since the day we made the trade. We have no idea what the value of the picks we sent or the players already selected are. We simply have nothing else to discuss until we see a large sample size of all the assets at large. I will say from a trade value chart the picks and assets we gave up was a good bet and I personally feel great about Bryce Young and think the world of him. But that is simply my opinion and we just don’t know currently.

That's about it. I don't know if we won or lost the trade, but at this point I can say that Young is a different cat, and super compelling as a QB prospect. I suspect that he could be generational in every aspect of the word. I mean, dude caught an incorrect play on the play script as a rookie QB during his first few practices. What other young guy would've done that? The list is super short, I assure you.

Very true but honestly if I’m GM right now for the Panthers, I still take that chance 10/10 if you believe Young will be a franchise QB. We can easily survive missing Moore, next years first and 2025 2nd with all the cap we will have starting next year.

Thanks for bringing the cap space up. It's one of the first things that I thought about. I'm close to 100 percent sure that it was taken into account before we made the trade.

I didn't get but so far in the thread, but another part of the calculus I'm sure was the presence of Matt Corral. Between him, the relatively massive cap space (relatively now), and the penchant for Fitterer to be able to manipulate and master the curves and twists of the draft---or at least the belief that he can---were all taken into account when deciding to trade. I believe that all these things, as well as Bryce Young himself made the reward well worth the risk. We will win, or even if we lose, the risk factors will be mitigated. But, I love the position that we're in.

On an off note, I probably wouldn't feel as secure or as good had we drafted anyone else but Young. I always said that if we traded up to one it would be for him, and I said it for a reason.

As for our receiving corps, I think that was more of a bigger question mark. We were taking a real chance (mainly on TMJ). We didn't know if we'd be able to secure Thielen or Chark. It seemed like Chark waited forever to make up his mind. It took Thielen a couple of minutes also. But it's obvious that Mingo must have been on their minds as well. It just turns out that we were able to provide Young with some pretty apt pass catchers, including Hurst who was somewhat of a surprise, but perhaps not as big of a surprise as Boobie (who was arguably the best free agent RB this off-season).

For quite awhile it looked like the Chargers won that Eli trade with the Giants.

LOL. No. Even the Chargers wanted Eli.  As for DJ, he was less than middle of the pack when you have Darnold throwing him the ball.  It would have been nice to see him get to catch passes from Bryce but that was an impossible Catch 22 situation.

We ended up with an upgraded wide receiver group. Losing DJ doesn't concern me at all. It comes down to whether Young is good enough to forget about the draft picks

I think that overall our WR room did get better, even with losing a DJ Moore. We have much more depth and are more well rounded from top to bottom. Plus we got Bryce freaking Young out of the deal. Huge win

Come on.....this trade was a win. Definitely right staff, right time.  And, Bears will not be getting a high draft pick.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but...knowing the history of this team, I am not ready to make any definitive declarations this early.

Now, I don't believe the Bears will be getting a high pick (which is definitely a plus---a moral victory, even if it may appear somewhat petty from one perspective, but at the end of the day it all speaks to a competitive advantage...or disadvantage).

Now, as for the "right staff," I very much think that still remains to be seen. I think it's easy to fall in love with Frank Reich because he generally says all the right things. It's amazing, right? My problem is that the reality is that he made some very questionable in-game decisions particularly in the postseason. I guess for me, I'm skeptical, but hopeful. I'll keep an open mind until I see a pattern of screwups. I'm thinking that Young will be able to cover over a lot of deficiencies if it comes to that (he'll, he literally already caught an OTA script error). And speaking in reference to Young, I do believe that the staff is absolutely the "right staff" in terms of his development. There seems to be some great support for QBs (Reich being one of them), and I am eager to see the results.

    • Damn Ghost had a hell of a series then huh?
    • The much shorter and less number analytical version of the above is that the T-Mac pick wasn't about giving Bryce an alpha receiver this season that dominates the targets. It was about shifting the rest of the WRs down a peg in their role to give Bryce better options this year while giving us a true #1 to take over next year when Thielen retires or signs somewhere else. It's to let XL and Coker grow this year as the 3rd and 4th option instead of the 2nd and 3rd option, so that they are then ready to step into those increased roles in 2026.  While at the same time it's to allow T-Mac to get used to the NFL game without the pressure on him that those rookies last year had to be THE guy.   And that's not to say he can't be THE guy, it's just that if you don't HAVE to do that to your rookie, it's better for the entire team, no matter how good that rookie may or may not be.  Expectations are different than real possibilities. It's very POSSIBLE for T-Mac to get to 1k this year, but I think it's unfair to put that EXPECTATION on him leading into the season due to the other options Bryce will have at his disposal this year.
    • Did you read my post though, I very clearly pointed out why T-Mac is in a situation that is nothing remotely like those 4 last year, so let's try again.... Malik Nabers had 1,204 yards, the next 3 best pass catchers on that team... Wan'Dale Robinson (699 yards), Darius Slayton (573), Theo Johnson (331) Brian Thomas Jr had 1,282 yards, the next 3... Brenton Strange (411), Parker Washington (390), Christian Kirk (379) Ladd McConkey had 1,149 yards, the next 3... Quentin Johnston (711), Josh Palmer (584), Will Dissly (481) Bowers had 1,194 yards, the next 3... Jacoby Meyers (1,027), Tre Tucker (529), Alexander Mattisdon (294) I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert on the games of all those next 3 players behind rookies, but I don't think it's at all a stretch to say that Thielen, XL, and Coker next year will ALL be better than EVERY player on that list with the possible exception of Jacoby Meyers. If you can't see how having Thielen, XL, and Coker on the team will take more targets from T-Mac than Nabers, BTJ, Ladd, and Bowers had taken from them with the rest of their Top 4 options on their teams, then you're just fooling yourself. Even looking at 2 years ago, Puka was the only rookie to get there, and his next 3 leading receivers were Kupp (737 in 12 games), HIgbee (495), and Atwell (483).  But this was also with the team having 4,300 receiving yards too, and if we have 4,300 yards in the passing game this year, then yes, I don't care what anyone else gets, T-Mac better be getting 1,000 or it will be a bad season for him. If you can't see that putting expectations on T-Mac in a vacuum because of what past rookies have been able to do, without any regard to the players on the team around him, then that's on you, sorry. So for you then, it sounds like you expect those yard to come from Thielen's total and that's what gets T-Mac over the 1k mark, which is a totally fair and valid prediction or expectation. Again, I'm not saying I don't think T-Mac will get to 1,000 yards. I'm saying it's not fair to have that as the EXPECTATION for him going into the season when you look at the offensive talent we have this year. Those are two VERY different things. If you EXPECT XL or Coker to take a step back and not improve this year, or if you EXPECT Thielen to finally lose a step and not come close to the 1k yard mark himself, then yes, I think EXPECTING 1,000 yards from T-Mac is perfectly acceptable in any or all of those situations and I'd then agree with you myself. But I don't expect those things.   I do expect XL and Coker to continue to improve. I do expect Thielen to have one more season of being the same guy he has been for us the last 2 years.  He's averaged 60.3 yards per game in his two years here, which would be a 1,025 yard season in 17 games.   It's going to be VERY hard if not impossible for XL and Coker to improve, Thielen to be the same player for us, and T-Mac get to 1,000 yards all in the same season.  If all 4 of those things happen, then as I've said before, Bryce might be a legitimate MVP contender as it means he's putting up video game like numbers, as it's hard to have 4 WRs who all produce like that in one season. Your argument of T-Mac not getting to 1,000 meaning either he didn't work out or the offense didn't work out, isn't fair, as there is a very real possibility that the offense clicks, all 4 of those WRs work out, and because of it, all 4 of them have suppressed stats this year compared to what they might have been able to put up without one or more of the other guys on the same team.
