He's excellent at run blocking. He paved the way for several big runs against the Lions and was the lead blocker on multiple 20-plus yard runs.

He screwed up many so many of our run plays by getting blown up and pushed way backwards that it might have traumatized me.

Did he I thought he was a good run blocker I’m not 100% sure I thought he did a good job but if you have certain games that he definitely failed miserably let me know so I can base my opinion off of facts.

Hes a above average blocker and if you want to run the ball, thats a +.

Meh, he was about average as a blocker. He wasn't a liability.

Go back and watch the tape again. He got in the way on occasion, but dude was subpar at best. Remember how (in)effective he was lowering the shoulder for yards? Same concept, and it was the reason guys like Hartsock and Manhertz had roster spots. Effort was never the issue, just effectiveness, and that's fine. He was a modern TE that was more of a receiver and he was damn good at that.

Im talking Ian, I think you are talking olsen(here). Thats all olsen had was effort at blocking, average is fine when you drop the first 1k,1k,1k seasons.

ian can and is a willing blocking edge. If he improves and what olsen did great(getting open and catch to fall) then hes a tool for young....

Gotcha. Agreed that Thomas is a passable blocker, even pretty effective at times.

Nah, he still has bad hands. He drops as many as he catches.  He's too unreliable as a pass catcher.

He had 21 catches last year and 3 drops.  He’s never had more than 4 drops in a season.  I think folks dream up this whole “he drops a lot of balls” narrative.

What are the reports about Tremble and Hurst so far in camp?

I’m wondering will the playing time shift towards them later in the season. Because Hurst is a very good blocker and Tremble was drafted because he’s a very good blocker. We’re talking about Thomas but will we see these two get most of the playing time during the season in the two te sets.

Ian has looked really bad the last few years.  Very, very underwhelming, and I was super excited about his measurables and potential when we picked him in the draft, but man he has been beyond disappointing.  But, honestly, with a lot of the guys I have trashed the last few years, I think this is the first actual season we can make a fair assessment of them because it's the first time they're actually getting NFL-level coaching.  And I mean guys I have wrote off as complete garbage - even guys like CJ Henderson.

I can't remember who it was In the offseason that did the interview where they said that basically guys weren't getting any developmental/ position-specific coaching under Rhule.  So, I will give Ian yet another reprieve this year, especially being an offensive guy, I really think he has a chance to be used to his strengths and capitalize on finallly having a real NFL coaching staff.

Yessir.  It was against the Bears a couple of years ago.  Had he delivered the contact rather than receiving it, he almost certainly would have had the first down.  It was the kind of play you expect a TE to make.

I hope he comes around, but I just don't have any reason to believe he will at this point,

I remember that this was on more than one occasion. He always seems to be dropped by the first DB he encounters when he actually catches the ball. Even better, he seems to get blown up by the first DB.

Id love to see him turn the corner, but I am not holding my breath, he has been bad.

    • Lawn boy he is trash! Dude wants to run the ball with the 25th ranked run offense. We can go back to Bryce talk now. Close!
    • I thought Matt Rhules felt like a traveling preacher/sewing machine salesman. Then I thought Reich had the emotions of the captain of a baby seal clubbing team. I kind of like Canales and think he may be adaptable in today's NFL. I know we need to to see it but does he not give you guys hope too, or will he get his moniker too? (My bad, tired of looking at the same thread titles)
