Offensive Playmaker vs BPA

Figure to get a new discussion going now that we're fresh into the offseason.

The question:

Is the lack of offensive playmaking a big enough need to supersede BPA?

Context:

Looking at any good offense that doesn't have a playmaking QB (Mahomes, Allen, Lamar), they have THAT guy at minimum.  CMC, Tyreek, Jefferson, Gibbs/St Brown, Lamb...you get the picture.

We have nothing.  Thielen and Mingo may be the only carryovers at WR, and Hubbard is the only potential carryover at RB.  Nothing really at TE (although I still like Tremble as a long term TE2)

Is this void critical enough to prioritize over the rest? Or should we exercise patience with building an offense and find the best player we can, position regardless?  This idea can also extend outside the draft in respect to priority FA/trade targets.

And with the uncertainty with Bryce-- is getting a legit weapon critical to his success or do you risk prioritizing BPA, hoping he elevates above-average talent for another season?

Can we rebuild by finding the best foundation pieces possible or prioritize offensive weapons? I can see how it could feasibly be a combination of both, but if you had to choose, going into 2024 -- where do you lean?

We have to go BPA with the state of our roster. That’s how the Lions built their roster and it is something to mimic. They were widely panned for taking a RB and LB in the first round, but they were both BPA in their rankings, and it paid off handsomely for them. We need great players and not reach for a position.

BPA but if that’s the case and it ends up not being on offense, we have to get Bryce some weapons in FA. That part is not an option, as we have to properly evaluate the kid. He was in a situation last year that was by far the worsts in the league for any QB, much less a rookie.

I don't really think we are likely to be able to land a game changing weapon unless it's overpaying for an aging veteran looking for one last payday.

We will be in a much better position next year with another top 5-10 draft pick(basically an inevitability). On the slight chance we end up #1 overall again, we might be able to get a banger of a WR by trading down in the top 10.

I would just say we need to temper our expectations about the ability to improve much on offense. Seattle with Smith and Tampa with Baker had SIGNIFICANTLY better overall offenses than we will in 2024.

BPA brought us decades of all-pros who elevated the talent around them.

Drafting/reaching for need just made us have a 2 win season.

Luke and 89 were largely BPA picks.

Bryce is 2-3 years away from the talent needed to make his style of play work. So…  2-3 years of middle/late round talent on D because rounds 1 and 2 went offense out of necessity to build for Bryce? And that’s assuming our picks actually turn out. That’s nuts. A defense of free agents, mid and late rounders? Really?

Are we trying to make Bryce win or trying to make the Panthers win? We drafted a project at #1 plain and simple and are now feeling the after effects.

trust the process. BPA. Build a TEAM. Another stud DT? I’ll take it. Corner? Sure. First 3 picks go defense and the huddle melts down? Whatever.

Teams that win on the regular: Stud GM and scouting, stud QB, pick a lineman with every draft and draft BPA. If you overbuild at corner and have too much talent now? Trade one for high picks, and keep reloading your roster bc your stud QB puts the team on his shoulders and makes the whole offense work. When on the cusp, put a couple talented but aging vets on the team looking for a championship before they retire.

Bryce? “If he dies, he dies.” Elevate the players you have, young man.

    • I always just go back to what I said at the time. Trade Burns to the Rams because it's a fantastic deal. I was screaming it. I'm still angry at Fitt over that. Right after he turned down the deal I said he needed to get into a time machine and go back and make the deal. Hate that dude. Ruined our team. Trading D.J was a major mistake because what matters most in the NFL is the passing game, so you never unload a proven #1 WR when there are other options. Always trade a defensive player over a WR if you have that option available. Fitt was precious about defensive players when we had a passing offense that didn't function. That's how know he was completely incompetent. The passing offense is the top priority, so until that is functioning all defensive players are possible trade fodder. At this point we're in a rebuilding year under a new GM and a QB who looks absolutely horrendous. It makes perfect sense, if you follow all of our moves, that we would be the worst team in the NFL. Of course we are. You can't screw up as a GM that many times over the years and not ruin the franchise. We're exactly where we should be, dead last, or bottom 3. Whichever you like. But this is the here and now. Dan did a good job getting our 2nd round pick back, and we won't know about the picks until they take the field in regular season games. We're in dark until then, but if they suck the Panthers media will hide it shamelessly. Remember when Young was supposed to be a football genius? Yeah he was rancid turds out there when live fire started. There is some hope. Either Young improves and we win more games, or he stays about the same and we draft a new QB in 2025. Either way the NFL will help us out of this jam, but all we need is for Dan not to screw it up.
