What franchises are in worse shape than the Panthers

Trying to be as objective as possible, it' still us. Yes the Browns have the deshaun contract but they have a talented roster otherwise. Yes the Jets have been historically not great but they too have a lot of talent. The Jaguars are perpertually finding themselves at the bottom and depending on how you feel about Lawrence they are maybe the only team you could say is just as hopeless as us but they have some young talented players as well so I would put them over us too.

Until we string together multiple solid drafts we will remain the least hopeful team just due to our lack of talent on the roster, forget the QB position

Two quick wins and all of a sudden everyone forgets how awful this roster is.

Honestly, there is a significant gulf in talent between us and Cleveland.

The only team close to us in that realm is New England.

The Raiders aren't that much more talented than us, but they are also one of the top 3 most projected cap space teams this coming offseason, so their odds of being able to improve are higher. A lot would depend on QB but the same could be said about us.

New England is in a fantastic cap situation.  Just like the Raiders.

That's why it's just Clev for me.

Jets mortgaged their future and will be in rough shape.

Saints are going to be hurting with salary cap the next couple years and will finally start to entre full rebuild territory.

Giants... Have fun with that Burns contract when he starts mailing it in since ya'll are a bottom feeder like us.

Browns will likely have to lose a lot of talent because of Watson's cap hit the next couple of years.

They are starting from a far lower point on the talent scale than the Raiders, IMO. When I say the Raiders are "kind of close" it's not THAT close.

That isn't likely to be bridged in one offseason and New England also isn't a free wheel spending team.

They are INSANELY more talented than us. There is not even an argument to be made in that regard.

Maye is very talented but also TO prone(basically what he is doing now) and it's led them to a 2-4 record versus Jacoby Brissett's 1-4 record. If anything that shows how little difference he can make because of the insanely talentless roster.

I didn't say us, just said other teams.

I think if this convo is held anywhere else in the world by reasonable football fans.....Carolina is generally going to rank at 32 and the worst.

If by "reasonable" you mean "casual", then maybe.  Otherwise I don't know how a reasonable fan with any understanding of the salary cap would say our prospects are worse than the Saints.  They're basically a "win now" roster that's considerably devoid of talent, in salary cap hell, 4-7 on the season, and just lost to us a couple weeks ago.  The biggest difference is in QB, and their QB situation isn't even good.  They've got an aging below-average QB accounting for almost 20% of their salary cap next year.  And that same QB might end up being a cap casualty next year if that's even possible without incurring a massive amount of dead cap.

Well that is what the thread is about.

They aren't an elite tier talented team, I would agree. Upper half of the league, IMO.

The QB struggles really have hamstrung their development as a team.

Yeah. But I was responding to the comment about them being insanely talented.  More talent than us, yeah. But also overrated in the talent department.

They have more issues than just qb.  Their defense is not good.  Their run d is giving up more ypc than we are. On pass defense, they get sacks but if they don't get to the QB, they give up big plays. They also don't run the ball well. they have several big names, but across the board, talent is lacking.

My impression is that we probably are near the bottom in a lot of areas but we're better maximizing what little we do have. Also, there seems to be quite a lot of bad teams this season to where it wouldn't take as much for them to spiral downwards.

If there's one arguable advantage on our end, not as much drama here. So far, Tepper's been relatively quiet. Chuba's plugging along nicely. Team seems to be in a lot better spirits compared to last year. Morgan's first draft is getting us some tangible results. No real rumblings about firing people. May take time to climb out of the hole but it helps a lot if we can just plug along and put the work in and avoid being pressured into bad decisions.

People have been saying the Saints are teetering on the edge of catastrophe for years now. I despise them in every sense of the word but I do not expect them to remain down for long.

Honestly the same could be said for the Falcons.

When Brees and Ryan exited the division we all rejoiced but still those franchises find ways to compete.

Until proven otherwise we will remain the worst due to the Tepper's.

    • Nobody is saying we don't need it, just that we have bigger needs elsewhere, and that type of WR is actually something that is often found in the mid rounds, you just have to scout and evaluate properly. Here's another way of looking at why WR in the 1st shouldn't even be considered an option. Looking only at players currently on the team, what position group would you feel strongest about 4 years from now? I'm not sure there is a better answer there than WR, as you have to think T-Mac is our best player on the team in 4 years (Brown is the only current player I think there is even an argument to be made over T-Mac there), with Coker not far behind. Our OL is too old to be considered, my opinions on Bryce is well known, Hubbard will be done by then and the rest of the RB is an unknown, Off-ball LB is maybe our biggest need, we only have 1 legit safety, it's certainly not TE, and our 2nd best CB right now will be 33 by then.   Brown should still be a beast as he'll only be 31, but nobody else on the DL projects to be that good in 4 years.  Edge rusher with Phillips, Scourton, and Princely is probably the only other possible answer than WR. So yes, that fast/shifty type of WR is 100% a need of ours, but we have so many other bigger needs both in the immediate and future, that to me, taking a WR in the 1st for the 3rd year in a row and having hit on another WR in the same time frame, just makes zero sense both currently and looking into the future.
    • Laughing at Slayton (Mooney or Calvin Austin III), but telling me that Coker is the next best thing since sliced bread...You laughing at Theo Johnson in reference to our guys too? LOL No one in their right mind thinks Nabers is anything but a stud (definitely top 10 if not 5 potential). You do realize that Thomas was in a new system with a furst-time coach last year (with a questionable QB to boot)? And yet still, it's possible that he eclipses even T-mac (not saying that he will). They didn't even mention Travis Hunter. In any event, we're not in the top half. Draft another legit receiver, and we will be.
    • Absolutely, very fair assessment of the team.
