Well, the Niners just doomed themselves to mediocrity

Brock Purdy contract details: 49ers quarterback signs $265 million extension to become one of NFL's highest-paid QBs

You cannot pay good QBs like elite franchise QBs. It's an absolute cap anchor. Hopefully they have a year, maybe two left in their current window because when they have to start making tough decisions to accommodate Purdy's cap hit they're cooked.

He’s been Top 8 in most important statistical categories since he came into the league.

id take that form of mediocrity all day.

Sure. All you have to do is fall backasswards into a serviceable late round QB on a rookie contract and then spend a ton of resources on offensive pieces and have an offensive guru of a head coach.

That all falls apart when you pay the serviceable late round QB like an elite franchise QB. His arrow is pointing downward because the offensive pieces surrounding him are starting to fall off. They're paying him for the guy he was when he was surrounded by elite pieces. When he was surrounded by merely good this past season he was an average to below average starter. And honestly, that's precisely what he is. Paying him this type of money they're gonna struggle to surround him with good, forget great. Within two years this move is likely to be looked at as a massive folly.

He is a game manager--average.   Unless you have a Mahommes or Allen or Burrow--trade your starting qb and draft one. I could pour the money in my defense and OL and draft a promising young QB.  Wow.

Cam Newton got skewered for saying the same thing…I.e., the truth

Haha people here act like we haven’t wished for this type of QB play since 2018. We would have cut off our arms for a Purdy.  Such a weird fanbase that never knows what it wants. I remember when many complained when Cam got his second contract lol

More like Daniel Jones

Imo, Purdy is better than Jones, not as good as Hurts.

My point was that Jalen Hurts was thought of as a qb who would doom Philly to mediocrity.  I remember us losing a game to him during the Rhule term and some of the post were "we lost to a team qb'd by Jalen ffing Hurts"

I think Purdy is a adequate qb.  He has proven that with the right team around him, he can win.  It might be hard to win Superbowls, but then only one team a year wins those anyway.  The forty niners have to do what they can to put their team in the playoff discussion and then let the chips fall.  Constantly reaching for the next great qb is almost always a losing proposition.

Profootballtalk.nbcsports.com  article said it was currently at 7th but it somehow had alot of fake money bc they dropped his old contract completly and replaced it with this one so the new money put it more of 10th but with alot of new qb contracts in coming years they said by end of next year it would be closer to 15th in the league.  All stuff i dont understand but they said initial report was inflated numbers and not real new money. Either way will be interesting to see if he grows or sinks just hoping byoung can put up numbers close to his this year and i think panthers make playoffs if he does. Screenshot_20250517-094235_Chrome.thumb.jpg.28a6dc0eef73a9514309c9e6c36cb2fe.jpg

I mean....his 2025 cap figure was like $5 mil.

This smacks of bad reporting, TBQH.

I don't think people here want to be in QB purgatory. We have been pining for a superstar like Cam again.

Wanting that type of play and being okay with paying $55 million a season for it are two entirely different things.

If Bryce were to become the same player Purdy has been, then he would surpass my expectations of him and I'd be okay with him as our QB of the future (and again, I've long been one of the bigger anti Bryce people here who doesn't think he is capable of being our long term solution).

But in no world would I be okay with paying him THAT kind of money, paying an average starter elite money is just a terrible decision.

Well, since 2015, the last time our QB played in a SB, there have only been 12 QBs in a SB including ours. Purdy is one of those 12 and of those 12 only about half would be considered better than good but they all got there which is more than most good QBs and even some great ones. Some people are just winners even if they aren't great. If SF didn't pat him he would have walked and then they are back to  where they were before Purdy. Great team desperately throwing qbs on the field hoping one stuck. They got lucky once. Would they get lucky again? He's one of the highest paid this year. But by the time that contract ends he won't be. Every SB QB becomes one of the highest paid the year they sign it. Even some who don't go to SBs like Lamar. I don't see how it's a bad move.

    • I fully expect them to pick up his 5th year , and they're waiting for him to put a full excellent consistent season of QB play in year 4 or 5. If that don't happen,  they'll eventually cut ties.  Here's to hoping he just goes on a team in 2026. The worst thing he could do is continue to see-saw us to around .500 records because it might be impossible to replace him at that point unless youre willing to do the veteran qb carousel poo we did from 2019 to 2023.
    • What do you think of Bryce Youngs career thus far? Are you excited about his progress or is it not enough for you? I included a poll of ranking his performance through 3 years thus far.  I personally think he's made some decent progress. Has had some high moments (last half of 2024, Rams game, ATL game in 2025)  but in my mind, those are still outweighed by the many more lowlights thus far (ex turnovers, missed throws, poor decisions)  It's a very mixed bag for me. He's done enough to get a 5th year option but by no means should we lock him in with a 50+ mil a year multi year deal. I want to see him play consistently well for a full year before that happens (yes, I'm still saying that going into year 4. That might be telling).  Just sucks when you see CJ Stroud, Jayden Daniel's, Caleb Williams almost immediately lighting poo up with their arm talent. Maybe Bryce is just an ultra slow burn. I don't know what to think anymore. Guess we're gonna be stuck with him for a whilr unless we end up being bad enough to earn a high pick next year. I doubted it lol. Overall Stats for his career:       ● 14 W - 30L (regular season)       ● 0-1 playoffs record        ● 61.4% completion, 8291 passing yards, 49 TDs, 30 INTs  Year 1:       ● 2 wins, 14 losses      ● 60% completion rate, 2877 passing yards, 11 TD to 10 INTs, 5.5 yards per attempted pass Year 2:        ● 4 wins , 8 losses        ● 60.9% completion rate,  2403 passing yards, 15 TD, 9 INTs,  6.3 yards per attempted pass  Year 3:        ● 8 Wins, 8 Losses         ● 63.6% competition rate, 3011 passing yards, 23 TDs to 11 INTs  Playoffs         ● 1 game in year 3 ( 0 - 1 in playoffs)         ● 21/40 (52.5% completion rate), 264 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.
