Trevin Wallace - One Final Shot...or is Cherelus someone to watch?

Linebacker is one of the hardest positions to adapt to in the NFL. Most don’t hit their stride until the tail end of their rookie contracts. Look no further than Devin Lloyd, highly drafted and didn’t really breakout until last season. I am on the fence about Trevin he definitely is still adapting to NFL speed. But honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see him be a solid starter next season with upside going forward. Keep in mind he’s only 23 currently, his best ball is coming up. He was insanely raw coming out of college, one positive undeniably is he has a true LB mentality he’s high energy and loves to hit you can’t teach grit.

They drafted Wallace due to his athleticism and measurements and not because of his linebacker play. I believe the initial plan with Wallace was to sit behind Shaq, Luvu, and Jewell for a few seasons and learn the defense.

Obviously Shaq's wheels fell off, Luvu dipped, and Jewell's brain is a smoothie now

We all know that he fell because of where he played and only one year of experience, but I think he's a sleeper and if he can take good coaching he might surprise us.  The only thing that will hold him back is EVERO.  Evero is not much on playing rookies.  He's going to have to play Hunter but after that I would not be surprised if we don't see many of our defensive rookies play.

I think he is the the kind of player that checks off all the boxes as a hidden gem.

never got a chance to start at Ohio state cause he had top recruits and nfl prospects in front of him and he was just a walk on. Had a great year but it was at a small school so he was overlooked.

I don’t think he will start this year but he will make the team. Why? Because he is a special teams ace. So he can offer versatility that other players at his position don’t.

Not as a starter of course but the guy we picked up in the 7th is he a Mike or a Sam?

In 3-4 you’ve got Mike and Will as your inside backers. Then you have a Sam(Scourton)and Jack(Phillips)your outside guys. I honestly think in true 4 LB sets Lloyd should be Will and we would ideally have a gap shooting demon as Mike…but we don’t have that so it’s up in the air on which role Lloyd and Wallace will have. Kuwatch, depends on his strengths what role he will be primarily, but would be inside Mike or Will.

I expect another LB to be picked up once cuts start happening.  The way injuries have plagued that position, it seems smart to have plenty of depth.  This team will go as far as the defense takes them because I don't expect our offense to start putting up 30 points a game.

I'd actually like to see Cherelus get a fair shot to win the job in camp. Wallace is decent in drop zone coverage, but he gets abused in the play action game and is often times out of position in the run game. It might just be me, but I swear every time I watch Wallace play, I see multiple plays a game were it looks like he's just trying to be blocked. Watching Cherelus last year he at least looked like he was trying to hit someone on every play. Wallace plays like a LB who doesn't trust what he sees and it makes him passive and cautious versus Cherelus who regardless of if his decision is right or wrong goes at it 100%.

If Cherelus could just stay healthy, Wallace would have remained on the bench.

Just to one up you and bench type players and starting- Jacoby Windmon is a guy on/off the PS. When injuries hit hard in 24, he had 18 tacks in two starts. His college LB is the LB here. If he shows up in peak form, why not let him get in on starting?

That 7th rounder looking more and more like a legit contender, I see the type of ST aggression he has playing.....for me that's what evero wants and its what Boom did, he just struggled against passes. Couple weeks with Luke in the film room and Jackson could be on the starting path.

Plus I heard from Mike Kaye, the team loves Bam and not just as a STer. So he could be in the mix too.

Panthers only carry 4-5 LBs

Wallace was playing well before injury, especially after his role and Rozeboom's were swapped.

He's literally going into year 3, as a 3rd round pick.

Let's calm down a little.

Who is over excited? A lot of people think we need better than what he has given us. We have watched him for two years, his alleged improvement notwithstanding, and he has been very unremarkable.

But we have little choice but to hope he gets it - he will get his year three opportunity and we’ll see

You're not the only one to see it. There is an interview where he relays that Luke and TD have told him to play faster and trust what he sees. Luke said if you're going to make a mistake make it at 100mph.

I’ll toss this out again-Wallace charts pretty well actually dropping into coverage. Rotating him in situationally and signing Bobby Wagner to come in and play early downs is a nice little boon to the defense.

They can probably get by with what they have, but with the developmental nature of the draft, boosting the team in the immediate is a good idea.

People seem to forget that Wallace is still 23 and will not turn 24 until February 2027.  There were a lot of players drafted who are older.
