How come you never see our teams draft board after the draft is over?

Recommended Posts

They do it for competitive reasons. Example- Dallas is thinking about waving player A, but they know Carolina had a 2nd round grade on him. So instead Dallas calls up Carolina and inquires about a trade. Herniay sends a 4th rounder to Dallas rather than waiver wire. Plus if you had multiple draft boards from the same team, it's very easy to see a pattern and know which players traits are valued. Another is agent could use the information to squezze more money, force a trade, see the lies etc.

As a fan I would love it but it would open up immense amount of criticism by “know it all” fans ect, which would out number the actual amount of grateful fans who would enjoy having such access, plus if the gm has said one thing in a press conference, smoke screen, than the board shows differently, that’s another distraction

Like you stated, as a fan I would have loved to see the board. I believe that would give us fans a closer look at what their mindset/gameplan was going into it. Unfortunately it could have given other teams the same insight. How valuable that would be is debatable.

As an organization, they “mucked their cards” so to speak. Good choice I believe.

Yeah, no. Imagine you’re considering 6 different girls to date. So you make a pros cons list to rank them. Your top two choices get taken before you can make your move. Then you start dating one and show them where they landed on the list...

This is a business, not Christian Mingle.

It also gives the other teams a lot more insight into your internal thought processes when making that draft board. That may or may not matter depending on your philosophies regarding the draft, but given the amount of poker playing that leads up to the draft, it's pretty safe to say that teams try to keep as much of it as close to the vest as they possibly can.

I also don't think it's necessarily a good thing for your new rookies to see where they ranked on your wish list. Better to just tell them you were their guy, you had them rated much higher, yadda, yadda, yadda rather than have them see that you were their 11th choice at that position. Maybe that would light a fire under some, maybe it would make others think that you settled for them and aren't really vested in them.

I just don't see any consistently positive outcomes for having that internal draft board becoming public knowledge.

Yeah. There is some poker involved in the draft so I would hate to give insight on how I evaluate talent.  It’s potential perspective and insight that could be used for future drafts or even in player trade negotiations.

I imagine it would do nothing but provide transparency between fans and the front office.. to prove they had a plan, also just sheer fan fair.. more chatter back and forth between your community can’t do anything but be good for the team right?

No. It is just going to turn into even more of a shitshow of second guessing, speculation, armchair analysis, and general bitching. The same thing that happens now.

It would be interesting for the fans but provide zero benefit to the team or front office.

With much more at stake. Which is exactly why you don't let it be known.

How many teams publicize their draft board? Zero.

Im not supporting the idea of releasing our draft board, but the reason is to not show other teams our draft tendencies. Not because were worried about some athletes "feelings."

I saw it:

1. Burns or Little

1b. Little

1c. Grier

2. Miller

3. That guy we saw at Oklahoma

4. Play it by ear now

Do you think this means the Panthers would have taken Burns even as high as 9 if that's where they were picking?

    • Damn Logan Jones had a good day too. Was high on him coming in as he anchored that top Iowa line and is a fire plug inside. He's gonna be 25 to start the season so maybe he slips into the 4th but I doubt it, even if C isn't a premium position. His play on the field was top notch and the combine boosted it again. Arm length is about the only knock. But guy is plug and play at C.   This is a loaded class at C. Need to grab one.
    • Bryce will be permanently replaced by a draft pick. There's not another Sam Darnold out there to save us. Tepper is going to see this throw because he dumped Mayfield and Darnold too soon. He's going to give it 1 more year before he will sign off on dumping another 1st round pick qb. Thats the cold hard truth of it. It doesn't mean we can't get younger and much better at the backup position.
    • Maybe I should have used a different word and saved that for me. I want someone that has something impressive about them.  Someone that has potential to supplant a guy who is producing 25th best type of numbers. 22nd, 27th all that bottom third neighborhood.  I don’t know where that will come from it just can’t be from even a 4th round pick this year IMO. Unless FA is crazy productive.    I’ll give Bryce a better than bottom rating for his playoff game. Well above low twenties. But at least half of his games were bottom third level. Probably 2/3 to 3/4 of them were.
