Thank God the Saints have $4 million to roll over. That will get them from $100 million to $96 million over the cap. I'm sure they'll somehow be able to sign several good players despite this.

Agent's Take: Here's how Saints can dig out of 2021 salary cap mess; potential cap casualties and restructures

Moore, Burns, Chinn, Brown, Jackson, Kerr, Obada Carter, & Daley are all good players (starter-caliber) that will still be on rookie deals next year (or in Kerr's case a very team-friendly deal).  Look around the league- that's pretty good honestly.

It's easy to crap on the mistakes your team makes b/c they are self-evident, but the Panthers are in much better shape this year than last, from a roster and salary-cap standpoint.

The Panthers were in perhaps the toughest spot in the league going into this year.  I'm sold on Rhule.

Rhule knows though that the NFL is different than college in that the QB question dwarfs anything else.

Solidifying the QB position is the most important thing any team can do.  A franchise QB is the best deodorant for other failures in building the team.

All the coaching in the world isn't going to elevate Teddy to being a top 10 QB.

We are better off finding the right QB and letting Rhule, Brady, and Snow coach the other players up even if it means lower draft picks.

Totally agree with everything said especially the QB position. I still believe we are about the same position as last year when it comes to holes to fill. Sure we will be in better shape with dead cap along with promising young talent, but look at the starter positions we have to fill. (minimum one LB position, 2 CB’s -we have Jackson alone who is on his last year, DT - even if you stick with Kerr we have zero depth, LT, G, G, C - that is in the last year of his contract and play has been middle of the road at best and RT that will take up the majority of our cap space if we tag Moton. We are really one year away from having our team in decent shape even if we find our QB of the future this offseason. the future looks bright but we need to make good decisions this season and have one hell of a draft then the following year we will be in much better position cap wise

It’s frustrating to think we finish 5-11 and our cap rollover looks like we were in cap hell or competing in the playoffs. $4M in rollover is crap and we can’t even keep blaming dead cap and Matt Kalil. Over half of our dead cap and IR wasted cap (Weatherly and Short) was created this year to compete in 2020. $81M (assuming Teddy stays in 2021) in new cap space to go 5-11 again. I get tired of people throwing in Kalil over and over to excuse the splurging we did in 2019 and 2020 for 10-22. We should have easily been at the top of that list looking like we had a great young core of CMC, Moton, Moore, Anderson/Samuel, Burns, Chinn and Brown going into the 2021/2022 drafts with 4+ comp picks to load up on OL and fill out the D. Tons of cap to splurge on a couple studs with a rookie QB or a vet. Effin Marty.

It's not Madden - you have to try to compete.

If we'd ran Allen / Grier / Walker out there last year I probably wouldn't have watched.

How is this team ALWAYS cap strapped

I wouldn't call us cap strapped this year. Our cap situation is very much league average and considering the cap is expected to decrease considerably this year, we're doing pretty good. We will almost certainly clear probably another $15-20 million in no-brainer cuts. We could in theory be big time free agent spenders by getting creative with our current contracts, shuffling money around and pushing a cap nightmare into the future like the situation the Saints are in. But why? Just resign Moton, get some modest priced free agents to round out the roster and draft well this year and we'll be good.

Agreed. Moton should be our one and only big signing in my opinion but we still have a lot of holes to fill even with signing cheap starters (two G spots, LT, CB x2 and MLB minimum. Along with DT depth)

Side note: Luke Kuechly and Gano count for over 9 million in dead cap this upcoming season 😳

There should be some relief for teams in a situation like that. Luke retired for medical reasons. That's not a performance thing, or a contract move. I think teams should have to eat about half of whatever cap hit there is if a player retires. If he comes back, whatever team is signing him would need to pick up the difference.

Lol anyone who ever takes over from Hurney always has a ‘challenging cap situation’

People always bring up starting Bell and chandler at OTs as a Dave fault, he had negative cap space due to herniay. Dave fixed the cap and got it stable within 3 years. Then he handed herniay a 11-5 team in great cap position..... Of course herniay fuged it ALL up again, fug that guy.  Soooo glad hes gone and he cannt hurt this team anymore.

    • I don't think so. I think once you're measuring electronically, the spot is where the sensor says it is. So if it says half yard short of the line to gain, that's the spot. Now how that works with scrums and the ball moving on two minute drills and poo is anybody's guess.
