Is Sam Darnold a 1-Year Rental?

They are taking liberty with Fitterer's statement  IMO.  Fitt said that there is a plan in place and they would deal with both 5th year options after the draft. I did not take that to me Darnold is on such shaky ground.

I don't think so.  I think they fully plan on exercising his option.  I just think this is a calculated comment to keep teams interested in the draft pick if one of these QBs falls to 8.

Did I just miss it? I've seen that reported twice. That's not what I heard him say. He said there was a plan in place and they would execute that plan after the draft. Not, that they'd make the decision. I've seen some speculation that there was something different they can do with how his money is paid out.

The reality is that Fields may not be any better than Darnold, and could be worse. We don't know. I'm not going to get lost in all the perennial draft hype for the next big thing at QB because it really hardly ever pans out according to the narrative based upon the general opinions anyway.

 

To answer the OP's question, I simply don't believe you give up a second for a one-year rental.

They're going to exercise it even if Fields drops to eight. Exercising it pre-draft would be showing their hand.
