Panthers selected Iowa DT Daviyon Nixon with the No. 158 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Nixon (6'3/313) made his way to the Hawkeyes by way of Iowa Western Junior College where he JUCO transferred from as a three-star recruit. The Kenosha, WI native redshirted in 2018 before showing promise in 2019 by posting 21 pressures, 3.0 sacks and a 76.9 defensive rating according to PFF. It was 2020 when Nixon really established himself as a top flight defensive tackle, being named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus All-American. An active player who likes to use his quick burst and agility to keep blockers off balance, Nixon employs a “euro-step” move when rushing the passer that calls back to his basketball background. He wins with speed and subtlety in the pass rush game as opposed to brute strength. Nixon excelled at his pro day, running a 4.90 40-yard dash and posting a 8.40 RAS. He'll help replace Kawann Short on the inside of the Panthers' defense.

What's intriguing is that Brown is going to demand more double teams than this guy.  I have watched a couple of videos on him and he is a violent tackler and will be good for this team.

I'm really loving this draft.  I don't know many of the names but after I read up on them and watch their videos along with other items you guys post.  This team is building an amazing team.  In the next few years we're going to be a team to contend with year in and year out.

I read he had a great first step which is great. He was a top college player. Maybe didn’t get a lot of nfl sacks but lots of successful defensive linemen didn’t get lots of sacks in college. He can sit a few years and develop, it can take a few years for a defensive linemen to develop anyhow.

Says he dropped due to off field issues???

I don’t understand why the nfl doesn’t have programs to help players with off field issues. I mean you invest millions of dollars in a player and you are in a company that makes  billions each year. Make a babysitting program. Make these players with off field issues get counseling, mental health help and make it to where they have someone watch them and make them live in a controlled environment. It’s not like you couldn’t make them sign a contract where they would have to agree to it.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
