Breer: Panthers "between a rock and a hard place" at quarterback

Uhhhhhhh…I’m pretty sure it’s clear who Rhule has already chosen and solidified who his QB is this season…I’m not sure what the confusion is??

kick out TB after a contract and pay him the remainder…trade picks and sign 5th option…and then decline top prospects in a better draft…

I mean good lord it sounds to me if THAT wasn’t the deciding factor, you’re simply just letting this idiot run poo into the ground

We already saved his stupid man infant face by signing Cam to throw fadeaways into opposing Ds to make some fans happy (yay more wasted cap)

but frankly it should be pretty plain, FORCE Rhule to produce results with Sam and when you fire him tell him his way didn’t work

Sometimes doing nothing is the best move, I'm just not convinced that is the course we will take.

Exactly. You don't have to do anything. Just ride it out with what you have and see what happens. The main focus should be OL. Make the OL better and whoever you bring in here, it would make their life much more easy. Worry about getting CMC healthy. QB shouldn't be that big of a deal this year considering what's coming out of the draft. Does anyone here see any franchise changing QBs in this draft? How many free agent QBs would want to come here with the OL as it is anyway? I have no idea why people keep bringing up Watson. Clearly, he's not burning the road up trying to get here.

I don't see a benefit to sign a veteran QB unless it's Wilson or Watson and he's cleared to play. I think they'd be our only viable options. Rodgers ain't coming and we'd still be paying Darnold, a lot!

I don't see a great benefit in drafting a QB with our #6 pick over drafting the best Tackle and other offensive linemen unless we picked up really good FA's.

Cam was here. Yes it did. I'm more into the future at QB but at present they're f'd and if free agents can choose are they choosing Rhule?! No.

Slim pickings as an official bottom feeding organization under Tepper. No cap space either for a superstar.

This community has a HUGE impact on what the team does as I said, last season was the example. Sorry you didn't see the reunion.

Newton didn't get signed because someone from the Panthers read the Huddle and thought "Hey, that's a good idea". The whole notion is stupid and delusional.

Not to mention that if any team official was dumb enough to go on the internet looking for ideas, we'd be even more screwed than we are now.

IMO, bring Cam back if he's willing, best man in camp wins it out between him and Darnold, unless we can find a salary dump off for him.

Trade #6 to add a future 1st, while recouping Day 2 capitol to allow more flexibility versus having to wait until 100.

I don't think there are any ''sexy'' options this off-season because they went into panic mode when the trades for Stafford / Watson fell through / SF traded up to #3. Then panicked again while 3-0 when Jaycee went down.

This team has been reactionary since Rhule has been here, there does not seem to be a clear plan in place, with the ability to execute it, so going into year 3 I expect even more frustrating disappointment.

Which is exactly why bringing him back made no sense.

Most players and coaches worth their salt aren't going to come to an organization with a lame duck coach unless they're in an equally tenuous position...  which then leaves us with the only guys who will end up coming here - which in turn, cements the bad season we already anticipate.  It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy in the worst ways, and is guaranteeing that Tepper wastes another year of everyone's time instead of cutting losses in a clearly bad situation and doing what he can to put us into a position to improve and/or win next season.  It's just so dumb.

Veteran QBs help maintain QB limbo. A washed up veteran QB (the only type that would come here) can lead us to around 7ish wins. That is not a good thing. That means we will not be high enough to select the QB who is the highest rated prospect in the draft, and maybe not even the second or third rated QB. That is the worst thing this franchise can do at this point. Dropping too far in the 2023 draft insures QB limbo until at least the 2024 draft. Teams in QB limbo are in a totally hopeless situation.

The key is to break out of QB limbo, but it's a painful short term process. You start Sam all season, and see how the dice fall. If Sam remains terrible, then we may escape QB limbo by drafting one the top rated QB prospects. If Sam plays well, then why not stick with him because he would clearly be demonstrating improvement. Either way you have hope for the future.

It only takes on season to escape QB limbo, but you have to make the right choices to get out. Otherwise it never ends. We could go a decade easily just bringing in one washed up vet QB after another and never see a playoff appearance.

We should get some decent lineman in FA and take the best O-lineman at #6. Or see what offers we get. We can’t really expect to draft a QB and expect to play him with the line we have right now.

Let’s get the line fixed as good as we can and bring back Cam so he can beat out Darnold and at least have a respectable starter in place.

For some historical perspective for brand new Panthers fans, we've been in this position in the past. We were in QB limbo with a guy named Matt Moore. He was mediocre at best, but we didn't have a 1st round pick in the following draft. We used our second round pick on QB Jimmy Clausen. As a rule I would never draft a QB who falls to the second round, but we took a shot.

Jimmy turned out to be one of the worst QBs of all time. It was a total nightmare, but that is a GOOD thing. Getting destroyed that season allowed us to take the top rated QB in the draft, Cam Newton. Cam instantly ended QB limbo, brought fans back to BOA, and gave us a shot at winning the SB.

I WANT Sam out there stinking it up. I want this upcoming season to go into the toilet. I DON'T want 6 or 7 wins. Veteran QBs are at their ceiling when the arrive. If they win you 7 games, then you can expect about 7 wins the following seasons as well. They're topped out, and they're getting older and weaker each passing season. We MUST escape QB limbo at any cost.

    • You wanted to be educated, get prepared… What @MillionDollarCam said about Kahlina and the defense, we’re currently tied for 2nd for fewest goals allowed, with a current streak of 4 straight shutouts.  Positional thoughts… GK - Already mentioned Kahlina DEFENDERS - Back four have been solid, even more the central defenders, Malanda and Privett.  We knew Malanda had potential and he’s living up to it so far this season.  Privett, even though solid last year, his potential was never clear, but this season he’s showing his true potential.   Fullbacks, Byrne and Uronen also solid.  Uronen currently injured (not sure how long) and hopefully not too long cause the current backup, Joao Pedro has been a liability these last 2 games when filling in.  Byrne’s backup, we still have Lindsey who fills in nicely as a sub or whenever starts to give Byrne some light rest.   Other backups, Diop and Tuiloma. Diop has yet to play this season I believe and Tuiloma, below average to average.  MIDFIELDERS - Ashley Westwood is top notch, nothing bad at all to say about the guy, imo.  Box to box midfielder, takes ownership of the defensive midfield area when opposition has the ball and support upfield when Charlotte is in control.  Diani seems like a similar player as Westwood, but obviously not as good.  Petkovic,  Bronico play a bit more upfield but Bronico being more defense focused.  Same as Arfield and Urso, Urso a bit more defense focused.  Then there’s Djaegere, who even though he’s the no. 10 and should be the playmaking outfielder, just looks lost out there most of the time, and unfortunately he’s been out there plenty.  Cambridge and Bender (injury) have to played so far this year. WINGERS - Because of injuries, Djaegere has been asked to play there plenty and I already mentioned my thoughts about him.  Maybe playing out of position is why he looks lost but he makes the simplest mistakes and awful passes at times.  Main guys are Vargas and Abada.  Abada has been bc of injury almost 2 months I think? I believe returns next game against Philly.  But when he’s in, oh man the attack level picks up a lotttt.  He knows how to time his runs perfectly to get open.  Vargas is a threat to get into the box and get open as well but sometimes he misses the easy passes (idk if it’s bc selfish or just doesn’t see it) and decides to shoot, needs to work on his vision.   FORWARDS - Swiderski is currently out on loan in Italy, but Italy could buy him at the end of the loan, which may happen. Iuri Tavares, back up, his natural position is forward but has been playing this season mostly on the wing since we lack players there and injuries.  Below average to average, has his moments winning one-on-one.  Even though he’s no longer on the team, he needs to be mentioned  Enzo Copetti…brought in as a DP who never played to that form last year but not really “bad” either. but oh man this year… Horrible, I don’t even know how else to put it.  After 2-3 horrible games to start the season, Dean Smith started to played the back up more and more   And that leads me to Patrick Agyemang.  When he started subbed in for Copetti, such a difference.  Easily better than Copetti, which is insane if you think about that he came through CLT through the draft last year (which usually doesn’t yield good players quick) and Copetti was a DP.  So that led to Charlotte selling Copetti, he went bye bye and now it’s Agyemang’s spot and deserved. So in summary: Defense: STRONG Midfield: Outside of Westwood, needs work..starting with getting Djaegere out and finding a true playmaker   Wings: Solid when healthy, need depth Forward: Agyemang average but still growing, and is just going to get better. With Jozwiak out during the past transfer window and now Copetti, there’s 2 DP slots open for Charlotte to get some real good players. And seeing how Dean Smith has evaluated players this season, I trust they’ll get the right guys. Dean Smith, he’s done amazing for what he’s been dealt with and he’s not afraid of playing younger players over experienced ones.
