Thoughts on trading DJ Moore?

I'd listen to what comes in but not actively shop.  We're looking at his 2nd contract coming off his 5th year (2022) and he's only 24.  If he was 26 and requiring top-5 money, then yes, I would explore it and see what type of value is there. But I think we can cement him here for the next regime.

He was the first receiver taken in his draft for a reason and will be 28-29 at the end of whatever contract he gets.  You listen if you're clearly getting more than just 1 pick.  I can imagine a lot of teams wanting him on his 5th year and to work on a new extension.  All just depends on what's presented but wouldn't be active in trading him, rather listening to what may come knocking.

Oh, I would always listen. Doesn't cost anything to listen.

There might only be about four guys oin the league who I just would flat out tell teams there's nothing you could trade me to get me to move this guy unless one of these guys on this list is part of the package you're putting together for my guy. Mahomes, Josh Allen, Herbert, Burrow. Honestly, that might be it.

It’s already been done champ. Vikings pulled this move trading Diggs for a 1st and getting Justin Jefferson. Not saying the Panthers can turn around and get a WR as good as Jefferson but they could sign a vet FA cheaper than what DJ will command in a contract extension.

The Vikings were very lucky that the Eagles took Jaelen Reagor the pick before Jefferson or else this would have been a cautionary tale.

First, let me say that anybody on the roster is available for the right price.

However (a word defined as "disregard everything before this word"), unless I have been eyeing a WR in the draft that had me drooling, what is the point?  We would be creating a big hole that we struggled for years and multiple drafts trying to fill.  Is DJ perfect?  Nope.  Can he be better?  Yep, especially if we get somebody who can get the ball to him reasonably well.

Like I said, everybody is available for a price.  But, the price for somebody who is a good talent in a position we are not convinced we have a ton of younger talent already available, meaning I then have to try and replace him......well, that would be a bit on the salty side.

I think a team with a little offensive talent as the Carolina Panthers had in 2021 would be crazy to trade their best offensive player (sorry CMAC, but you can't seem to stay on the field).

However, one thing that needs to be considered is how DJ feels about the situation. Let's say he loves the Charlotte area and wants to be part of the effort to rebuild the team, then I think you need to work on an extension.

On the other hand if he has no interest in signing an extension, then you may need to consider a trade instead of letting him leave after his 5th year. Some may feel letting him go is a good way to get a compensation pick. I wouldn't want to run my team with an over reliance on obtaining comp picks.

1) They are never any higher than a late 3rd round choice.

2) The draft is a crapshooter so there's no guarantee additional comp choices will actually make the team better, especially when you have a suspect front office/head coach running the draft.

3) In some years, it may be better to rely on proven FA's to fill roster holes than to rely on unproven picks after the 2nd round.

If you knew DJ wanted out after his initial contract, and you had a willing trade partner,  you could possibly trade him before his contract expires for a late 2nd/early 3rd round choice and come away with a better player than you would get with a late 3rd round compensation pick.

Take a look at the link above. It tells you which teams are getting picks and the round in which they are available. A few teams are getting 3rd round choices, but most of the choices are coming in rounds 4-7.

it’s still a pick you’re going to have to use on a WR.

Why would you have to use the pick on another WR? You have two young guys that were just drafted that need playing time to see if they are worth keeping around. If CMC is used more in the passing game, that is even less balls to throw to a WR. Plus, Tremble could develop into a decent receiving TE. On top of all that, Anderson is still here and possibly Zylstra.

If DJ is traded, that pick(s) could be used to fill other holes.

DJ is a number 2 receiver, and paying him any more than that would be a mistake in my opinion.  We already fugged up by extending Robbie Anderson instead of locking in DJ for a similar amount.

I like DJ but he leaves a lot to be desired in the route running department.  He accumulates aggregate yards, but he's invisible in a lot of big situations in games.  On top of that, he could probably use a fresh start, since his body language looked absolutely miserable out there at times.
