On Tuesday, the Detroit Lions announced they had signed free agent wide receiver Devin Funchess. However, Dan Campbell and Co. will not be using the 28-year-old in his old position, as Detroit is going to give him a shot at tight end.

Funchess last took an NFL regular-season snap in Week 1 of the 2019 season as a member of the Indianapolis Colts. After catching three passes for 32 yards in the season opener, he broke his collarbone and did not play again that year. Funchess then got a chance with the Green Bay Packers, but opted out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and another injury resulted in his release shortly before the start of the 2021 season.

The University of Michigan product was originally a second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2015, and was a part of their special Super Bowl run. Funchess put together some nice performances during his four years with the Panthers, including a seven-catch, 120-yard, one-touchdown outing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016. His best campaign came in 2017, when he caught 63 passes for 840 yards and eight touchdowns.

Funchess joins a tight end room led by T.J. Hockenson. Detroit also has Brock Wright, and drafted former Virginia Tech tight end James Mitchell in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Philly Brown was actually really solid for a UDFA.  But Corey Brown… oof.  But yeah Funch played a lot of TE in college, more than WR, so that pick was always a head scratcher.  Especially since we traded up for the guy.  Dave isn’t good at many things

Philly Brown was only serviceable in the regular season. Remember when he allowed Talib to almost rip his head off in the Super Bowl?  That's when I knew we were done. That dude had NO fire in the most important game of his life. Neither did most of the team, Gettleman got rid of those guys.

I seem to remember Brown being one of the few guys who actually played his heart out that game

      Yes I agree, the future RT could easily be christ. When he shocking re-signed here for the cheap, he said part of the reason was the OL coaching staff.  I've already thought too much about 2026. The RT has all the options, including resigning Motown. I was never a big fan, but he's solid and peptides and stem cells can fix a gippy knee. If he makes it though this year and wants to return, why not for 2 years 16 million?? Or like you said give the job to Christ or draft your RT...... that I feel is the best current method. With both OGs in the 20 million per cap range and Icky......ooooooooooo boy he could be the first 30 million per OLmen in NFL history. That's a huge portion of cap space for the OL, which I agree with, but in order to offset those 20 and 30 million deals... you need cheap rookie contracts. (unless Motown would take a huge pay cut and whoever the C will be).  This is the deepest OL I can recall in Panthers history.  I believe Morgan should try and trade either Kingston or Zavala.  I didn't even talk about Yosh, Tarquin, or Walton. Yosh is same age as christ and why not him as RT after good swing tackle years? Tarquin is a UDFA on the prayer program, 150,000 in guarantees and why not him in 2026? Walton seems to be a OL coach favorite, he followed the Tampa Bay staff here after 2 years there and add in one year here, he's stuck around for some reason. I think they need to spend very light on RT and Panthers have lots of options, I love it.
