Why was Josh Norman a one hit wonder?

Recommended Posts

I think he played on a very good defense.  That helped.  I do think was more of scheme centric DB but that applies to a lot of players.

end of the day, I think his aggressive play style could be similar to a gunslinging QB.    Especially in todays NFL.  The style of play simply isn’t going to lead to consistent play.   And the league is built for DBs to lose battles.

Josh came of age and played really, really well -- he even brushed greatness. Then he let it go to his head and his agent made it worse. He believed the hype, his agent tried to make more of him than he'd even gotten close to being, then his bluff was called and he never recovered from the jarring stop to the fame train ride.

Had a wise and steady hand been able to stay on him, he'd have remained one of the best in the league for quite a while.

He was a late bloomer in a contract season. That happens

Saw a rankings of the top 10 one hit wonders in NFL history and he was on there, so I made this thread.

Was an unknown player before, balled out in 2015 (was a top 3 defensive player that year) and quickly fell back to obscurity. Was it just 2015 magic? Or his supporting cast? 🧐

A combination of these....

He was a 24 year old as a rookie.... Didn't break out until year 4.... He was a fantastic zone corner and injuries robbed him of his.speed with Washington (and he didn't have any to spare).

I wouldn’t say he was a system CB but leaving us definitely hurt his career. He fit so well in McD and Rivera’s defense, was still solid in Washington just not quite as good. Also he was elite in his playing time in 2014 so more of a 2 season wonder. Still one of my favorite all time Panthers despite the shorter tenure, loved watching that guy play.

This. We had a helluva pass rush and our cover 3 shell zone allowed him to mainly sit back and read and react. That's what Norman had in spades - great reaction and ball skills. We always complained about Ron's D always playing CBs with a 10 yard cushion but it was exactly what allowed Norman to excel.

    • You would hope so. I’m confused why the sports world seems split on Bryce when he’s obviously not working out.
    • So let’s do the reverse? Make everyone agree everything he does is a disaster? I also think the whole “gaslighting” is on the eye of the beholder. It went from he can’t avoid one single sack countered with he actually did that well Sunday (with data backing it) to a little breakdown of why he is so bad. People are going to have different opinions. I’m also not going to pretend this wasn’t happening Day one with this little QB.
    • All this great stuff he has done, how often does he do it?  I have it at three or four games out of 14 where he was very good and then you get a drive here or a series there where there are some good things. Here is the gaslight part: everyone has put him on a curve with his first year the baseline, neglecting to understand how bad he was then. Even if he comes back twice as good, where does that really leave him? 25th ranked or thereabouts.     He had so far to go, and still does, it is a Major ‘settle’ to accept his play as worthy of giving him our future.  You want to settle when the Bucs have Mayfield, and the Saints have overtaken us at QB? We will be third in the division at QB. That is good enough for y’all?
