So in nine seasons as a playcaller, his teams were in the top 10 four out of nine times. 4-5. I know top 10 is good and all ... but 4-5 could not be a more classic Panthers type number.

It's actually been revealed since the firing that Irsay dumped Reich specifically so that he could hire Saturday.

Irsay went so far as to say that if Saturday hadn't been available, he wouldn't have fired Reich.

Via a direct quote from Irsay? Or, another one of your Tweets?

Depends on who you ask...

Albert Breer said he was still in the mix but Ian Rapoport reported he's out and has gone home.

Lay off the Twitter, Scot.

my new prediction is that the panthers will not be in charlotte in 15 years. tepper has zero respect for the fans. zero connection to the city. and we are about to see this fan base disappear like weve never seen before. you cant go from rhule to wilks. the smart fans wont pay and wont show up. this will give him more ammo to move the team.

u got the inside scoop that its wilks?

People don't want to hear it but you are on the money with this in regards to Tepper’s process. Though at least with Reich we will see emphasis on the offense.

Okay, so who actually has a better resume than Reich?

I'd agree Tepper seems to be playing it safer with this hire relative to his last one, but I don't see how this is a poorly made choice made over meatballs or something. Reich has an impressive resume, he's just not as exciting to fans.

Great thread, Ricky.

Sadly, although I like Reich as a person and really liked him as a player (as a young football junkie, I used to trade for Reich on NFL95 on Sega because he was the guy that led the NFL's largest comeback win and one of our first franchise QBs), I just find the hire to be extremely uninspiring.  He may be an offensive-minded coach, but he isn't one of the young guns everyone wanted, and he has a pretty strong, established history of the usual average results we've come to know and expect from our franchise.  He had what, 4 years as HC in Indy?  And he produced a winning percentage right in line with every coach in franchise history with 3 years or more of tenure - barely over .500.  I did love his work as an OC with the Chargers and Eagles, but his results as a HC speak to mote of the same that we're accustomed to.

On one hand, optimistically, I feel like 2 of his years as HC should be omitted because he was attempting to win with Matt fuging Ryan and Carson fuging Wentz.  With Luck and Rivers as his starters, he went a combined 21-11 those years.  But with anyone non-elite, he was extremely average, and that's what bothers me.  We want a transcendent coach whose schemes make even average players look good, and good players look great.  But instead, my feeling on Reich, is much like our past coaches, his success is far more dependent on the level of talent of his players than his players' production being enhanced by his schemes.

It just feels like an offensive version of more of the same.

Yeah I'm not expecting much with Reich, but the benefit is that he'll swink or swim relatively fast. With Wilks it's .500 land for the next few years

To be fair here, it's hard to assess how much a coach is making an average player elite vs a player taking himself to the next level with his own development. It's hard to untangle Belichick's success with Brady, Payton's success with Brees, Reid's success with Mahomes, etc. I think you can clearly point to someone like Kyle Shanahan in being able to elevate the level of play of his signal callers, but even then there are limits to that (Trey Lance has looked like an enormous bust). And like I said, Wentz, who's looked like an average bum under other coaches, had his best years and was playing at an MVP level early in his Philly tenure with Reich as his OC.

But I totally understand why folks aren't excited by the hire if that's how it goes. I'll be happy with it if only because it's someone who is an offensive mind and not just a sentimental hire.

Because it is exactly that.

People are already chugging the kool-aid as a coping mechanism but anyone that expects to win with a hire like that is on some fun meds.

We've taken our time more sure but we went from saying it was going to be a small pool of candidates to bringing in just about anyone who would interview and now we are back to Wilks or a retread. And as far as I can tell no one has so much as given Wilks a call. Now people can speculate that has to do with his lawsuit and it's possible but I don't buy it. I can accept Reich as the head coach. Though he has cons like Wilks we can't overlook that. But again it is at least a new direction so I would wait and let things play out while hoping for the best.

    • Every year it looks like someone does a sales pitch to Tepper and that's what he goes with. It's also why it has been a horror show on the outcome side.  The hard thing about Bryce is he is likable so people not only like him but feel like they need to defend the good guy. If he was a jerk like Wilson was on the Jets then they could just have signed a QB off the heap to try and Baker into the playoff this year while being justified but not with Bryce. I can't believe people let McG scam them. I guess some people have money to burn and like to be sold regardless of reality.
    • Fun game last night.  Defense on both sides really was good.
    • alright im going to post seriously here for a second what you are seeing with bryce young is the confluence of some well understood cognitive phenomenon: mistaking what you want to happen for what is happening and working backwards from there (call this working backwards from a conclusion/cognitive dissonance, im sure im mixing up the terms a little here), and getting scammed and defending the scammer (call this the gregor macgregor affect i don't know there's probably a term somewhere, google is unusable.) People who care a lot about the Panthers want them to have a good player at the most important position in the game, and the Panthers gave up a ton to be in position to take one, and they took one, so that must be the good player. There is obviously an overload of available information any lay person can find that they can use to convince themselves that what they wanted was happening. to the lay person, it was aggressively obvious right away that it wasn't going to work out. it was clear halfway through the first quarter of the atlanta game he did not belong in the nfl. a bird's eye view of the season shows at best the second worst season ever. But people who really wanted something to be true cannot accept this, and instead pick apart details or blame things or wishcast into the future or move goalposts to defend it because they cannot accept that what they wanted and what they believed they had is actually....not there. People do this all the time. I've got a patient right now in late stage frontotemporal dementia and her POA just will not listen to me or hear what I'm saying because he was told I'm an amazing provider with inpatient neuro experience and when I look at him and say "you need to understand expectations" or "she has no quality of life" he just refuses to understand what I'm saying. The second is this weird trait we have where if we get scammed, some people will defend the scammer. if you get bored read up on gregor macgregor and the mosquito coast, but basically he was charging people to join an expedition to settle this absolutely poo stretch of land in south america. all these people either died or had to be rescued, but when they returned to their home towns they refused to believe they'd been scammed, blamed other things, or even blamed themselves. This guy was CLEARLY a scam artist but they could not accept they, smart rational people etc had been scammed. This is some weird vestigial evolutionary trait that helped a group of monkeys work together to take the watering hole and no of course there's no modern day political equivalent why you imply such a thing. Panthers' fans were scammed with Bryce Young. Tepper (david or nicole im not sure which) were scammed with him. Obviously it's more complex than one scottish dude drunkenly walking into a bar in Buenos Aires but it's a similar setup. And yes the stakes are lower than moving to the other side of south america but a scam is a scam is a scam. It is very difficult for people to admit that they, ostensibly smart, rational, logical people would believe and buy in to something so obviously rotten so the blame has to go somewhere else. Every problem with Bryce has an cause external to him, and all problems will be solved by /random thing that has happened the specifics don't really matter. Currently it's a guy who no other team interviewed for the HC position. if you read this and your first instinct is that i'm attacking you, you need to take a deep breath and reevaluate some things. this is an opportunity for personal growth and you should take it. surely some people will counter with "well it's just football it's not that serious and why does it hurt to be excited for something?" This is what's called a "though terminating cliche" and is just a cutesy little phrase meant to stop the conversation and help the person using it avoid defending their terrible ideas. and to the person saying "lol wow you typed all this up u mad," <puts poo posting hat back> don't judge what i do by your own limitations. I'm much higher functioning than you and this was neither time or energy consuming for me. This is a casual thought. I am learning not to hold people to the same standards I hold myself, so I don't blame you for reacting defensively out of a sense of wonder and inferiority.
