3-4 Defense?

With a new head coach comes the possibility that, depending on who we hire as defensive coordinator, we could be switching schemes. That could include a switch to a base 3-4.

Personally I think this would be a good idea as it would allow us to unlock Brian Burns' full potential as an edge rusher and better hide his deficiencies as a run defender.

If we were to switch what would our front 7 look like? We need edge help regardless, but does Derrick Brown play DE or stay inside? Where would Frankie Luvu play? I'm not sure he's a pure edge defender or mike linebacker.

Would a switch mean Jeremy Chinn stays at safety? I don't see a big role for him in the front 7 of a 3-4 defense.

If nothing else it's something to think about as Reich puts his staff together.

If we go 3-4 we are going to have to completely rebuild the defense. From the ground up.

Not really most our young edge rushers fit that mold tbh.  Derrick Brown would be natural fit at a 3-4 end imo, i think we could really go either way.

I guess it depends. I think Brown could handle the middle but he might be ideal on the edge. I think our personnel would work somewhat..

IF I had to shuffle around and make it work, the most effective lineup would be:

Brown - (Need a body) - Yetur(??)

Burns- Luvu - Chinn - Haynes

That's with the thought of bringing Chinn back closer to the LOS and Shaq being a cap casualty.

We'd get pressure but would likely suffer in the run game the first year. Wish we would have signed Reddick to a multi year when had the chance.

The modern defense is so mixed scheme wise, there's barely even a true "base" defense for over half the teams.

We do need a guy that could line 3 or 5 tech depending on Brown and Burns' assignments. Absolutely LOVED Justin Madubuike the other year and that player type is who I'd love to target.

    • the did alright group Bears....got their QB and WR. so WIlliams will have DJ and Odunze to throw to. much better situation than Fields or Bryce had (two guys i'm sure he will be compared to in his rookie year). Pats...got a pretty good QB. Raiders...got Bowers at 13? ca-ching. Vikings...got them a QB and an Edge to build around. not too bad. Both Xaviers...Worthy in an absolute dream situation and Leggette with his home team.  Chiefs and Panthers....got a couple guys who will end up fitting a lot of needs for them.    the not so much group Maye...good QB going to a sucky situation. could wind up like Stroud's situation or Young's.   falcons...word is the Cousin's camp is as perplexed as we all were. apparently he was told that they were going to look at drafting a young QB. also apparently that discussion didn't involve telling him they were going to draft someone in the first round. from the looks of it, i think they want to be the packers. it's one of those things that i don't think they thought all the way through. i hope it comes back to bite them.   the "well, i didn't see that coming"  move 49ers taking Pearsall.  i figured Leggette would be going earlier than a lot of people thought (mainly thanks to us), but i don't know anyone that was talking Pearsall in the first round. Not a bad choice at all, i just figured it would be McConkey they picked up.
    • you mean like he did to his old bosses house?  Dude is petty and a baby
    • I also think he is accustomed to moving on quickly when he thinks things are a bad investment.  That's not always the case in football because it takes longer for things to develop in football sometimes.  He also relied in the wrong people for advice.
