One note that has stuck in my head that Jordan Palmer said about Levis back in late fall/early winter: If Levis played for OSU or Alabama this past year... he would not only be the number 1 pick of this draft, he would be seen as the Andrew Luck of this decade (paraphrased)

That's interesting. I am hoping they can identify talent that isn't appreciated by fans, because there is a category of successful QBs that were overlooked/underrated when ranking prospects.

Mostly because these long odds high stakes highly speculative guessing gambles people are focusing on, are not making me optimistic. I am down to hoping these new decision makers are smarter than Mac and Bone and all you pie in the sky posters here that want to give it all up for a shiny new trendy toy.

If our coaching staff thinks they can turn him into Cam Jackson why not stay at 9 or trade back if he’s falling, strengthen the team elsewhere and roll with Darnold or another mid level QB to bridge the gap instead of trading future valuable draft capital away

I feel like people get some specific gratification about drafting 1st overall for the sake of it.

The  "just trade to 1 to be safe" strategy seems really absurd. It's emotion driven.

If I thought it was actually safe, I wouldn't be so negative towards it.

I understand your perspective and I am not going to push back on it. I don't feel that I have been too radical on Levis, and if anything I have been more defensive of him on here than anything else. Most of the time when I am posting about Levis it is in defense of misinformation about the kid, or conjecture that has little data to support it.

Most my content here comes from all of the services that I subscribe to. I am football nut and listen to all types of content daily. The primary perspective that I have on Levis has been driven by listening to current and former scouts/coaches talk about him. They see him in a far different light than posted here.

I think it might be time for me to write up a post on Levis sharing all of this content and the pieces around how his game would translate to the NFL. I was going (and might stilll) to wait until after the pro day to write up, just so I could contribute all of the facts.  Especially, if the hudddle would find this valuable.

That’s possible but remember, you also have to beat out the competition in front of you. Levis has elite measurables.  At Alabama and OSU I don’t believe he would have beat out Bryce Young or CJ Stroud for their respective starting spots. Regardless of size the player that plays the best in practice typically gets the nod. He struggled to win the starting spot at Penn State hence his transfer. Tons of narratives out there but the rumor I went with was neither QB stood out at Penn State so the coach went with the vet presence. Sometimes a player just is who he is. He’s an above average college QB at his peak, but to be an NFL starter you need to be a unicorn.  In Levis’s case I don’t believe that will translate to the possibility of him becoming a top 10 NFL quarterback. I would love to see your in-depth analysis of him though. As previously mentioned I enjoy your perspective l just feel indifferent on Levis.

Here’s a thought experiment:  A. What if the new administration thinks more highly of Hooker than most of the draft experts here on the Huddle?  Not that Hooker is better than any of ‘the four’, but that the gap between Hooker and ‘the four’ is not as great as many here perceive?

B.  What if the new staff believes Hooker is actually less risk per unit of draft capital invested?

Well he's already 26 and he's not going to be able to play this season (or much of it as he's recovering from ACL surgery), so yeah... that's a bold choice.

Some push back for you real quick on the Penn St narrative. The reason Levis didnt play there is because of Coach Franklin. Franklin is like Rivera/Rhule in the sense that he plays the older more senior players than the talented players.

If there are any Nittany Lions on this board, they will share how ass backwards coach franklin is on his roster management. Levis left because Franklin was too loyal to Sean Clifford. Perfect example is that the Nittany Lions had the nation's top rated passer sitting on the bench last year while clifford sucked it up. Drew Allar was the number QB prospect in 2022 and never saw the field until Clifford got hurt.

Coach Franklin is one of the best in the business at recruting talent, but he is a mediocre coach. PSU should have been a top 5 team this past year but due to coaching mistakes they were mundane. It is the same story year and after year with Franklin.

Levis made the right choice by leaving two years ago. He would have never saw the field due to the loyalty that Franklin shows to his more senior players like Clifford. Clifford was pretty average during the 2020 season, yet Franklin never elevated Levis.

As stated by this Nittany Lion reporter on ESPN's article : It will forever be a mystery question for Penn State football and head coach James Franklin.

So if I get this right, Person is saying someone might take AR higher because of an outstanding performance at the Combine.  Or, maybe they wont take him higher...

That is great journalism

Appears he will be  right one way or the other. 🙂

There may be some people who just want to move to one to move to one. There are some people who just want to draft a QB in the first just to draft a QB. What I am saying is that in order to get the QB that you want, and not just any old QB by default just because he's there or the one that's left, you must move to one. Otherwise, what's the point if you're not going to get your guy because you let someone move in front of you and draft him instead?

I still come back to rumors that Indy loves Levis and Houston loves Young. I think the Panthers are in a good position to get Stroud. If that is at pick 3 that's fine. I really do think he may be there at 5 though with Seattle

Trading up to five for Stroud or Young or sit at 9 for AR or Levis is what I think we should do.  The details of the Seattle contract just came out and they have a pretty good deal w/ Gino so i don't think they want a qb. Raiders are the next shoe to drop. Hope they trade for Mac Jones, but I doubt that rumor is accurate.

I’ll grant you both points, though I’m not sure that any of ‘the four’ will be ready to start the first game of the regular season, unless you subscribe to the ‘throw ‘em into the deep end of the pool and make them swim’ theory.  I think you can still get two contracts out of Hooker before the team needs to move on to someone else.  If you take Hooker at the bottom of R1, you could get five years out of that first contract.

All speculation on my part but, until the draft, what else do we have to do?

Speaking only for myself, I just can't shake the feeling that he's Zach Wilson 2.0. From what I've seen, his footwork and accuracy leave much to be desired. I could very well be wrong, and if we draft him, I'd be rooting for him all the way, but nonetheless I'd still be disappointed on drafting Levis and missing out on the other three.

What’s wrong with Levis’ accuracy? At Kentucky, his completion % is identical to Young and only 3.6% below Stroud. Levi’s clearly was under more pressure with much worse skilled teammates, so unlike AR, I’m not sure I see accuracy issues. Bad decisions, sure, but how much of that is situation.

I’d be way more concerned about AR’s accuracy in terms of fixing it.

I have no idea who will be the best but if Levis is the staff’s choice I hope he does well. Unlike Lance and Wilson, Levi’s at least has tape against top teams.

Richardson had a terrible team around him. Walk on receivers with a defensive tackle converted tight end.

Levi's had years to figure it out and regressed. His decision making and processing was poor, reminding me so much of Sam Darnold. If he wasn't athletic, he wouldn't be considered a first round pick.

    • All I can say is... I have some happiness off the rags choking and losing to the Panthers. Hopefully the Western conference team wins the Stanley cup, but now I can be 100% uninvested in the playoffs
