Food for thought on The Trade and the Pick.

Yeah, the NFL really likes to keep the lid on topping picks prior to draft day. And I think the Panthers are going to enjoy being on the spotlight for awhile controlling things sitting on the #1 pick.

So I think we already know who we're picking? Honestly I'd be shocked and horrified of we didn't. You don't make a trade like this without having THE guy in mind.

So, I wanted to share some broader picture food for thought from a long-time offseason huddle vet.
There has been a lot of chatter around the Panthers trade that can be straight up ignored, headlines such as us being willing to trade back, us keeping all the QBs open as options, and Tepper liking Young and Reich liking Stroud, yada yada yada, Its all meaningless hype and conversations starters for the Draft which is still 46 days out.

The NFL pushes these narratives because they want fans to remain involved and excited for the Draft. After all, if the Panthers came out and said who they were drafting right now, which there would be nothing to stop them from doing just that at this point, it would kill the ratings for the early draft order because right now you'd pretty much know it 46 days out if they said who it was now. Yes, some hardcore fans like us would tune in anyway to watch, but your casual fans wouldn't the moment they knew who the pick was, and that's the reason for all the misdirection headlines we have read since the trade happened. Also, if you're newer to watching the Draft, the NFL used to let the teams make the announcement way in advance, and they made them stop doing that before the Draft just for this very reason. I think once, the player even had the contract worked out before the Draft.

Something else to consider: You only spend that capital on a trade if you're 100% sure who you'll draft, especially considering part of the cost was DJ Moore. Because DJ Moore is part of the trade package, Panthers have already decided who they are drafting and are 100% all on board. Tepper would have had to sign off on a trade like this, so this narrative that the Tepper and Reich are split is entirely false. And with that said, the Panthers, in a roundabout way, have said who they're drafting, but I'm not going to spoil it for yall if you haven't figured it out yet.

It's Stroud btw

I agree with this. However, I think there are more reasons not to announce the chosen pick yet. Even though the Panthers may be locked in on a player, a lot can happen in 46 days. An accident, injury or character issue could rear its ugly head. These players have been vetted and this appears very unlikely, but this early it is wise to be cautious.

I am glad they haven't announced who they will draft.  I agree that they have made up their mind but truthfully I can't say for 100% it's Stroud.

Stroud seems to be the best option because Reich wants a QB that can run the RPO and I don't think Young is durable enough to run that type of offense.  It's tough to overlook Young because he has that Mahomes ability.   Stroud was right there with Richardson at the combine in the throwing portion.

Young being a distant second, IMO could have us saying.  If we only drafted Young. While he maybe the most ready I have a fear he'll end up like Tua after a couple of season of abuse. If we do draft Young we better ensure that our O-line is top tier.  If we have Young and a weak line he'll disappear in no time.

The darkhorse in my opinion is Richardson.  I know many would absolutely lose their minds if we drafted him.  But, IMO his ceiling might be greater than both Stroud and Young.  The young man from what I have heard was exceptional in the interview portion of the combine.  Not to mention he absolutely lit it up in the throwing portion of the combine.  You combine that with two coaches that seem to know the QB position quite well. If we draft him and he took to the offense well, maybe he surprises us and starts game 1.

So my opinion it's Stroud but deep in my heart I would love to see us take gamble and bring in Cam Jackson.

Was Mario Williams the last time a pick got announced before the draft? He’s the last one I can remember.

Probably not. Cam was 5 years later and he was the first after the rookie cap structure was put into place. I’d assume one of the next 4 draftees was announced as well. Before Cam the 1st pick was a negotiation so teams announced the pick more often because they tried to get the pick signed before the draft. Don’t want a Bo Jackson type situation where he didn’t sign and you lose the 1st pick of the draft.

Panthers are going to draft a qb who cares which one they are all the same. This is equivalent of going to Vegas and putting all the rent money on black.

Unless they take Will Levis .....
