He was the 2nd most inaccurate passer in the SEC in 2022.

His floor is Josh Allen? Come on man, are you new to watching the NFL? Like all QB prospects his floor is being a massive bust. Richardson's amount of college experience and stats are closer to Trey Lance than anyone else, except Richardson played in the SEC. Now pile on the pressure of being the #1 overall pick. The risk is SUPER high.

I like Richardson, don't get me wrong. In the right situation on a team that is patient, he could be very good. But you just don't trade what the Panthers traded to get to #1 overall and pick a guy who might not be ready to start for 1-2 years, and has a huge bust potential.

How long have you been a scout? It seems like you know a lot about football. What team do you work for?  I've only been watching football for a little over 50 years. Maybe you could teach me how this game is played.

Everyone is a scout in March and April after watching only good plays on YouTube.

Mental processing, accuracy, pocket awareness, etc. are all forms of talent and both Young and CJ smoke him in those areas. Most physically gifted yes, most upside because of that sure. But most talented, no. He needs a ton of work to have any NFL success.

Pocket awareness, only Young could arguably be said to be better, but even so Richardson had a better sack avoidance rate. He is also much better within the pocket than Stroud, no question. Under pressure, Stroud's accuracy and mental processing faulters. Oh, and Richardson is much more likely to hit his second or third read than any of the top four quarterbacks before anyone brings that up again. He also looks off safeties and defensive backs constantly, getting them to turn their hips and commit before he throws the ball to the next read.

At this point I'm kind of tired of hearing things about his quarterback traits that aren't true. He has accuracy issues stemming from his low body mechanics, but generally has a fluid upper body. That's his biggest fault. That's pretty much it. Every other quarterback trait he either has or excels at.

Just the other day on Reddit I had a guy tell me Richardson was a "one read and go" quarterback that played in a "spread" offense. It's like no one is actually bothering to watch his games and instead are set in their minds about who he is. Through the process of watching all the top four quarterbacks' games (that I can find), most multiple times, I've went from having Richardson rated as my fourth quarterback I was hesitant to take at 9 to my 1b, depending on how I view size that day.

He processes very well though?

Again, i wasnt commenting on him specifically.   I was responding to the comment that everything besides size and speed can be coached to qbs.  I think his processing is fine.  Not at Young's level but it is fine.

Anthony Richardson NFL Scouting Report Weaknesses
  • Has struggled with his decision-making and needs to improve his pre-snap recognition skills to read defenses and see blitzes. Doesn't decipher information as quickly as you would like, but does see the entire field and understands coverage.
  • His mechanics are hit-or-miss as Richardson struggles to remain consistent. His stride is inconsistent, leading to sporadic accuracy.
  • Although he does have a quick release he still often hangs on to the ball too long leading to sacks
  • Richardson has a bad habit of fading and throwing off his back foot when the pocket gets muddled, and he is too often all-arm when throwing on the move, sacrificing accuracy massively.
  • Limited experience - has just a single year of college football behind him and from a passing perspective it wasn't pretty
  • Very inaccurate - he consistently misses open receivers. His accuracy isn't even close to anybody in the top 10 of this year's QB class
  • Poor throwing mechanics - hasn't demonstrated he can be a consistent dropback passer

I'm intrigued by Richardson's skillset. I think the Panthers instantly become a top 3 rushing attack in the league. I don't compare him to Trey Lance, as Lance wasn't in Division 1 Football, much less a Power 5 conference, and played 1 game in 2020 due to a shortened season. He had a long layoff of not playing football.

However, Stroud and Young are more polished at QB. I think for Richardson his private workouts and interviews with teams as they go over his film and ask him about certain plays, calls, protections, etc. will be key.

I see Frank Reich as conservative. I don't know if it was by choice but taking on QBs like Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, and Matt Ryan has me thinking he won't invest in Richardson or Bryce Young for that matter. I think the safe pick is Stroud. He plays within the system and can hit all three levels of the field.

Frank won't be the final call. It was reported Tepper/Fitt/Frank will all make a group decision on the QB.

We already know Tepper loves Bryce. It's up to Fitt/Frank to figure out who they like.

If I had to bet today I think Bryce is the pick.

I'm pretty sure it was reported Tepper is letting Fitt and Reich decide.  I think he isn't in on the final decision, which is the way it should be.

Staff /ownership are leaning on Frank. They wont draft someone he isnt high on.

Evidently I can because I would have thought someone who has “been watching football for a little over 50 years” would know better than to claim the floor for an extremely raw QB prospect with a losing college record and accuracy problems is a Pro Bowl QB before they even take a snap in the NFL but hey, thanks for letting me know that your wrongness is just rooted in a lot more information.

    • I want the conversations at season's end to be more about what else we need to build onto the foundation to be playoff contenders and less about the fultility of drafting yet another QB and hiring yet another coach because as long as Tepper is the owner, it doesn't matter what this team does.
    • yeah I was hoping  that we stayed put & drafted Levis at #9  i even said on here after we foolishly traded up for Bryce Young that I would not be surprised whatsoever if the Bears were picking #1 overall with our pick this year but what ...just saying
