Panthers to draft LG early?

The Panthers have brought in 4 OG candidates, suggesting that they are looking at the position very carefully.  Brady Christensen scored a 57.3 on his PFF score, and he had 11 penalties at LG last year.  Rumor is they want him to back up the OTs as the swing T, necessitating the need for a starting LG.  While Cade Mays is an option, I would assume, there might be a early Guard selection needed to protect Bryce.  One of the things that the Saints did when Brees was at QB was they kept stud OGs in front of him in pass protection, and it also improved the run game considerably.  So maybe, instead of drafting another WR early, the plan is to upgrade LG.  Two guards that have visited the Panthers for a private workout/meeting (numbers indicate player overall ranking in Bruglar's draft report):

  • 40. Steve Avila, Center, TCU (PRI)  Possible pick at #39.

  • 77.  Chandler Zavala, Offensive Guard, N.C. State (PRI)  possible pick if we trade back or he falls to 93.

About Avila:  Overall, Avila needs to better understand his biomechanics to access his explosive power, but he plays with a strong base to
anchor and control at either guard or center. He fits both zone and gap schemes and should be an immediate starter as an NFL rookie.

The other guards the Panthers brought in (some listed at other positions, but all have G ability):

  • Anthony Bradford, Offensive Tackle, LSU (COM, PRI)  Probably a day 3 pick, and can play  (possible pick at 114)

  • Nick Saldiveri, Offensive Guard, Old Dominion (LOC—did not count against 30 visits)

Yes--this screwed up everything about my mock draft.  I blame myself.

I like the idea of reinforcing a strength.

  • Both G's ended the season on IR.
  • There is no guarantee Corbett returns to form.
  • Good interior OL are typically available on day 2 and 3; whereas good OT almost always requires a high pick.

Andrew Vorhees in the 3rd on essentially a redshirt year would be my preference for the position and focus on TE/WR/Edge at 39.

Regardless I'll trust the staff - they've done a better job than most of us could have imagined setting us up for BBPA.

I had the same thought, but if Corbett and possibly Christensen are rehabbing, I am not sure they would draft another rehabbing G.

I think there are 2-3 starting guards (day 1) in this draft.  Avila is one of them.

No!

BG comes back in full strength.  Wins comeback player of the year, becomes a fan favorite, and makes first pro bowl  while simultaneously becoming your mother's favorite player.

Happy North Carolina GIF by Carolina Panthers

OP brings up a good point but what if that does not happen? We have very little depth at all for tackle and guard. If Icky gets hurt BC slides over and who plays his position?

    • If you're looking for a pat on the back it sounds good in theory until you realize they also had the 2023 Panthers as the top draft class.
    • Going into the 2003 and 2015 seasons we were supposed to be the joke of the league each time. In 2003, John Fox was supposed to still be in rebuild mode. We had a guy named Peppers on the defensive line who was supposed to be pretty good. We had Rodney Peete as our starting QB and a line that was a lot of hope and not much experience. Our new running back was a guy the Redskins, errrr Commanders, had jettisoned for being too old. We had a good kicker and writers thought that was needed because there were going to be more field goals than touch downs. Heck, it looked like they were right up until just before halftime of that first game when we had to yank Rodney Peete and put in some Cajun duded whose name couldn't be pronounced. And Steve Smith? He wasn't Smitty yet. Moose Muhammad, well, he was close to being written off as a bust. You know how that turned out. And then in 2015, we had Cam Newton, who was electrifying to watch but hadn't really won anything yet. There was an offensive line in front of him that looked like it was made in a defunct Swiss cheese factory and our big hope on offense was the great Kelvin Benjamin. And then he got taken out for the year with a knee injury in training camp. Ted "Feet of Lightning, Hands of Stone" Ginn became our default go to guy beside our next best hope, yeah, Devin Funchess. Our defense was pretty good, a scrappy bunch with frikkin' awesome linebacker play and a cornerback who had done more than drank the Kool-Aid, but had snorted the powder. He played like a superhero and became sort of a bat-man during the season. By the Super Bowl he had completely lost his freaking mind, though, and managed to talk his way out of a contract with the team next year. No one was expecting us to win the NFCSouth that season, much less almost go undefeated and into the Super Bowl. So, 2026? Who knows? But our best seasons came when no one had a reason to believe in us, except us.
    • it's not so much this personal vendetta against the Carolina Panthers as it is more about Bryce Young never not once been in the same conversation with the top 15 or even top 20 Qbs in the NFL ..just saying
