It’s funny how mad we can get at a slight to a player. I read it as he felt like Baker was a better prospect coming out of college. Mayfield did go #1. He also said that Baker had a tough situation the last couple years. That’s it.

I see nowhere in there that Arians would take 2023 Baker over any of the top QBs in the 2023 draft. That hyperbole is all headline attention clickbait by the author. I also love how the weak author makes the title a question so he can’t be wrong but can get more clicks which of course we all gave him.

I was reading it as Arians decided to go after Baker, THIS YEAR, instead of any of the top 4 QB's in the draft. That's ultimately the decision he made, even though the jump from 19 to 1 was probably never a real option. His arguments were the same ones we had a year ago, and a year before that with Sam. Mayfield did have a couple of good seasons with the Browns, and I was excited when we picked him up. Mainly because Sam had never been good. Rhule obviously did him no favors, which Baker proved by being decent once he was traded.  Honestly, if baker were in any other division, I'd wish him the best of luck but I also doubt he'll ever be anything other than bottom rung starter or better than average backup.

full disclosure: I only read the quote that the OP posted, not an entire article.

I really don't think his situations the past two seasons have done him any favors but he's still probably an average starter at best in the league.

That's fair.

And I'd like to think even the most diehard Panther fans would admit that working under Matt Rhule wasn't exactly a good situation.

I think Baker fits what Arians' offense does rather well. Get the ball out quick and take shots downfield while the playcalls scheme receivers open. Happy for him that he's getting another opportunity to start. As bad as the Panthers' QB room was last season, I don't think anybody would have been successful under Rhule/McAdoo.

Considering where the Bucs were picking, I agree with Arians that Baker was the best option. Young or Stroud would have been perfect fits but there was no way they'd be able to move up to #1 overall like the Panthers were able.

Yep, the OP only showed the bolded out of the full quote below which indicates that as draft prospects he had Baker rated higher coming out of colleg. There were people who had Mayfield (and Darnold) rated higher than Josh Allen during that draft. Those people might be willing to bring in Mayfield now hoping he lives up to their years earlier ratings but it doesn’t mean they wouldn’t take Josh Allen if given a choice of the two.

I can honestly say out of these four, I had Baker rated higher,” Arians said on Monday at his Arians Family Foundation gala. “That’s an honest opinion – coming out [of Oklahoma].”

Mayfield is the favorite to open the year as the Bucs' starter.

Hmmm... If Arians was that confident in Baker, wouldn't they give him like a 5 year deal?

That means he had 2018 Oklahoma Baker Mayfield rated higher than 2023 Alabama Bryce Young or 2023 OSU CJ Stroud. His eval sucks but it's not as bad as saying that Baker should be more desirable in '23 than Young or Stroud.  If you go by NFL.com draft profiles, Young is slightly ahead of Mayfield and Stroud is slightly behind. Given the fact that we now know that Mayfield has flopped at Cleveland and Carolina, i would not have said that.

Exactly, seems so obvious what Arians said versus what the author tries to imply for clicks. We clearly all bit on it.

If TB hadn’t signed him he wouldn’t have said anything, but they did so he’s pumping Mayfield’s potential up to fans who might be on the fence to buy tickets for a likely not so good year.

Sounds familiar...

Bucs quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis said Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield will get "even reps" during summer practices.

Offensive coordinator Dave Canales echoed the importance of a quarterback competition while on the podium. Drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Trask has been parked behind Tom Brady for the past two seasons. His only action during a regular season game came in a meaningless Week 18 contest last year. Mayfield, on the other hand, has thousands of live reps under his belt, but that's not to say they have all gone well. For now, it's safe to assume the Bucs will hold a true camp battle between the two quarterbacks, though the winner will ultimately be a weak fantasy option, even in Superflex leagues.

So he signed him to a long term contract? 😉

We have a cast off head coach though , so I am not has optimistic has everyone else , my heart hopes, but my brain asked why he was replaced with Jeff Saturday , not everyone is an idiot for firing there coach , keep in mind that's probably what Nebraska fans are saying about Tep and Fitt right now

There are other "cast off" head coaches who have done well in their next opportunity.  And I think it is a widely held opinion  that replacing Reich with Jeff Saturday was Irsay insanity.

Reich has assembled an amazing staff...got to be the best staff this team has ever had.  There is a lot of reason for optimism IMHO.

We've been trying for like 2 days to talk him down from the edge. He is coming around, albeit rather slowly. But he is defiantly less frantic than he was yesterday.

I don't get how ANYONE that has been a Panther fan for any length of time cannot see that this staff kills.

C'mon folks. You are supposed to learn from the past. Not live there.

    • Well bois, we gave the Devils their due! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery... The jersey boys have been trying to jack our steeze for a few years now. They've followed our blueprints and studied our tape. Every offseason, they pounce on our sloppy seconds in a Newark minute. Quick with the puck, ferocious on the forecheck and stifling team defense. Down to the colors, this is this closest we'll come to having to play ourselves in Ole Stanley's Hockey Hoedown. As the postseason began, Rod stood flexing in the gym mirror and saw this guy staring back from the void... (Shutters) When beating us at our game didn't work, Timo and the Tri-State Trash tried to tango instead. Outside of a bitchass cheapshot on Freddie, that poo didn't work either. Their goon squad was getting wrecked by our bantam weights. As much as we all wanted to see Svechy or Staal Bunyan literally break someone in half after the Great Dane went down, they didnt need to. Our munchkins were monsters! Jarvis obliterating giants at the blue line, Logan laying the Stank on dudes twice his size and Blakers blasting Timo into next season. It was beautiful to see! (Side note: Does JBlo wear lead weights under his pads? 170lbs shouldn't be able to hit that hard!) We closed it out in 5, for the gentleman's sweep. Only team in the league to win a series in each of the past 7(?) seasons! And, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year... Onto the awards: Key To The Series : 6 for 19 - .316% IT FINALLY WORKED!!! MVP : 16/180 g/s - .911 save% - 2.53 gaa Seriously, without this dude, we would've won in 3! (Trust me bro) 3rd Star : 6/94 g/s - .936 save % - 1.59 gaa The Great Dane   2nd Star : 3 g - 5 a - +1 - 20:38 toi/g - 18 hits - 3 bs - 58.1% fo 3 PP goals and the 2OT series winning goal! WOOAAAHHH NELLY!!!!   And, your 1st Star of the series : 5 g - 1 a - +3 - 16:48 toi/g - 16 hits - 1 bs - 1 tk - 50% fo Zero, I repeat, zero penalty minutes for the series! MISSSTAAAHHH SVEEECHNIKOOOV!!!!!! Onto The Next: Now, we wait for the Habs to make it a nasty 7 game slog, while we recuperate. And, hopefully, get Nikishin, and some of the other black aces some real peactice time. We are gonna need those guys at some point. Because, if you think the Devils were dirty, hoooo boy, wait till you see what's next...
