Has anyone within the Panthers' organization realized that we only have 5 DL on the roster? 4 TEs and only 5 DL.

This is gonna be interesting.

I want to believe that this means they aren’t really that worried about the Burns situation and it’ll be sorted tomorrow… but I’m starting to think maybe we still just really have no idea what we are doing.

This isn't at all unusual for a 3-4 team.  Barno, Burns, Gross-Matos, and Houston can all come down and play down on the line.  So saying we only have 5 DL, while technically true, is misleading.  We certainly have more than 5 guys that can play on the defensive line.

Other 3-4 teams also only have 5 listed DL on the roster.  Packers, Ravens, Vikings, Dolphins, Titans.  And most of the other 3-4 teams who do have more than 5 listed DL, only have 6.  And if a team has 7 (like the Rams), they are running fewer OLBs than us.  Patriots are weird in that they have 7 DL and and 5 OLBs... but they also only have 2 RBs on the roster, so maybe teams just build differently than others and that is okay.  But there is nothing wrong with only having 5 DL on the roster on a 3-4 team.

I can't believe we are not adding a TE to the PS.  Hurst has a reputation of being dinged up throughout any given season and our depth sucks.  Considering this SHOULD be Ian Thomas' last season, it couldn't hurt to develop a young guy.  Heck, they keep trying to make Sullivan into something and now he's on IR, so let's try another dude.

Y'all do realize we'll be in Nickel defensive sets primarily...that ONLY calls for 2 IDL, 2 Edge, two off ball LBs and 5 DBs, and that will be somewhere between 65 to 70 pct of the snaps.

The "34" base defense only requires 3 DL, so if we carry 5 for now the numbers work, the depth quality is the concern, not the quality.

Also it's 3 TEs and Ricci, he's a fullback...that's normal as well even if you wanna classify him casually as a 4th TE.

    • When I say "average NFL WR", for me, that's comparing him to all WRs in the league during that season/span of time.  He was of course better than those #4-6 WR's that can't even get on the field, but talent/ability wise, he probably wasn't any better than a #3 WR for most NFL teams, he just happened to be on one of the teams in 2019 with even worse WR's so he put up solid stats for the season. Here's more or less how I'm looking at it. Take T-Mac right now and Chark at his best, put them on every NFL team at this very moment, and where would they fall on the depth chart come Week 1 (basically, the teams that don't put the rookies at #1 to "make them earn it in camp" don't count, it's projecting week 1 depth charts). T-Mac would be at worst the #2 WR on the majority of teams this season, (hell, he's likely our #1 at this very moment right now already), peak Chark would not.  Yes, T-Mac still has to prove himself at this level, but his current ability, even as a rookie who hasn't played a snap yet, would have him above Chark on any team's week 1 depth chart. Because again, you can't just fall back on "well Chark had a 1,000 yard season" and use that as the reason for having him above T-Mac.  As he didn't have that 1k yards because he was a beast, it was because he was the only halfway decent receiving option on a bad team that was always losing and passing the ball (the Jags had the 7th worst scoring differential that season).
    • We clearly need to add a veteran stopgap at safety one way or the other.
    • On Panther's Wire too. No idea, just found it and trying to share. https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/panthers/2025/06/15/nfl-free-agency-rumors-panthers-eagles-justin-simmons/84219881007/
