They really screwed up with Burns. I’d like to keep him, but I too doubt he wants to be here. He hasn’t played himself into the money he wanted and I think it’d be foolish to pay him like he’s a top 5 edge rusher. He likely won’t accept a second tier level deal. Our best hope IMO is to tag him and try to trade him- even the tag will be more than he might be worth- but it’s better to try to get something for him than to let him walk for nothing. If we do pay him I hope he proves me wrong- and wish him the best.

if burns wanted the "elite" money he was looking for, this would have been the season to prove it since he is in his contract year. instead, he's having the worst year statically despite switching into a defense more suited for his skill set as a 3-4 edge.

derrick brown on the other hand has been elite as a 3-4 end

They aren’t going to let him walk so he’s going to get elite money next year if we tag him.

He was the one that cut off negotiations. I would be happy with anything for him but I'm prepared to watch him walk. Maybe they can pitch a one tag and no more type deal. I wouldn't get my hopes up, he wanted to be paid long ago.

Worst case, he'll be tagged and traded. No one in their right mind would let him walk.

The tag isn't what it used to be. Either they pay top price, let walk or make some kind of deal like a one year tag but not 2. It's absolutely not 100% in the teams control anymore. It would also be a real bad look for a new GM if it was handled poorly. Hardball after the fackaroo here wouldn't be turning it around. There is a big chance he walks because of past mistakes.

Do we really have to pay him 30 million a season? At this point since we were too foolish to trade him for those two firsts couldn't we just let him walk and use that money savings on longer term contracts for Derrick Brown and Frankie Luvu? Those two guys look as if they still want to play and they both consistently show up anyhow.

I don't understand the "let him walk and give the money to DB/Luvu"

The tag is $20M. He is easily worth that, and it is no problem at all to sign all three. What else are we going to do with the money, it is not like we have a bunch of stars om rookie deal coming up soon.

For the long term, the question is not "is he worth $30M" (he is not given today's play). The question is "can we get better value for $30M free agency". Sadly, nothing suggests that we can.

For reference that we can afford all three, these contact come off the books and cap is increasing. (Even with Fitt pushing a lot of cap for mediocre played to 2024).

Dead Money

Name Cap Number
Christian McCaffrey $18,352,250
D.J. Moore $14,625,000
Robbie Chosen $9,719,168

    • Well, hope they're not worried about a torn Labrum or Rotator Cuff, as someone who went through that myself, I know those don't have anything show up on X-Rays but from the MRI, so this is kinda a nothing update, hope it's not a tear or his season is already over if they decide to do surgery now. Which is basically what would be needed to get him to 100% for the start of next season's training camp if it's a labrum.  If he plays the season with it and then does surgery, he's not going to be ready for camp and probably not the start of the season either.
    • I always try to not pay much attention to a team’s preseason win/loss record. The 1982 Washington and 2021 LA Rams both lost every game in the preseason and went on to win the Super Bowl, whereas the 2008 Detroit Lions and 2017 Cleveland Browns both won every game in reason and went on to lose every regular season game. There’s many examples of teams that lose in preseason that go on to have good seasons, but equally there are teams that lose in preseason and that continues in the regular season. Which will we be?  I think our floor is a handful of wins, while our ceiling will probably be around the 9-10 win mark. The latter will require significant improvement from the whole team and coaching staff, and will also need Bryce to play like the QB we drafted him to be. I want to be optimistic and predict a winning season, but it’s really difficult as a Panthers fan!
